Research Purpose: Pressure ulcers are a key-contributing factor to health problems in the inpatient setting. On average, those who acquire pressure ulcers are individuals in the elderly community. It plays a part in a patient’s well-being and standard of living. The phenomenological study of this qualitative research study indicates that the impact of pressure ulcers caused patients to live with challenges through their daily lives physically, emotionally and both mentally and socially (Spilsbury, et al., 2007). The main focus of this qualitative study was based on 3 questions: 1) How people with pressure ulcers rate their health and quality of life, 2) What are patients’ experiences of developing a pressure ulcer, and 3) What are patients’ experiences of pressure are care and treatment (Spilsbury, et al., 2007). References for this article are moderately current regarding this topic. Databases that were searched included, “CINAHL, MEDLINE and Embase databases (May, 2006) using the term ‘pressure ulcers’ and ‘quality of life,’ both as free text and subject heading, and exploded both terms to include all subheading” (Spilsbury, et al., 2007). The population that was focused on within the four articles that were selected included spinal cord injured patients along with others that had surgical flap reconstruction. Two out of the four provided patient insight on the possible impact of pressure ulcers on the quality of life. It identified the impact of pressure ulcers on the lives of the patients’, which included their physical, social, financial status, changes in body images, and loss of independence and control (Spilsbury, et al., 2007). On the other hand the other two articles did not have a clear insight on the relation between pressure ulcers and quality of life because of the fact that they were existing conditions that impacted patient lives similar to that of the impact of pressure
