Every President of the United States selects a cabinet to assist in running the government. The Cabinet supports the President with expert information regarding the department they have been selected to manage. They are appointed by the President and confirmed by Senate members prior to assuming responsibilities of different departments of the executive branch of government. President Thomas Jefferson had a cabinet that looked very different from the cabinet of President Trump. The members of President Jefferson’s cabin include James Madison, Henry Dearborn, Robert Smith, Albert Gallatin, and Levi Lincoln. Today’s modern Presidential cabinet typically consists of 23-28 members. Some key positions include Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Hopkins states “Tillerson never has worked for the government or anyone other than Exxon since 1975” (Hopkins, 2016). The Treasury Department is headed by Steven Mnuchin, he helped design the “mail-opening process” at Trump Tower. This is where staff separated envelopes from campaign supporters and their donations within. James Mattis is the Secretary of Defense for President Trump. Lauterborn states, “In 2010, Mattis replaced General David Petraeus at the helm of U.S. Central Command, with responsibility for ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan” (Lauterborn, 2016). Also, Mattis has reportedly clashed with Trump’s transition team over selected candidates for roles in the Department of Defense. There is a newer post that became official since the terrorist attacks on New York, the Secretary of Homeland Security Job. Some additional key cabinet posts that did not exist during the Jefferson Presidency include Secretaries of Commerce, Labor, Health, Housing and Transportation. There are posts for Energy, Education, and Veterans Affairs.
