If Atticus followed societal norms or was prejudice than he would not have defended Tom, especially for free. Also he likely wouldn't give Calpurnia a ride home in the first place, and wouldn't go to Tom’s wife and tell her whats going on. Atticus also wouldn't go downtown to defend Tom from the group of white men who probably would have killed him. Atticus did this stuff out of his own accord and and it never benefited him, also when called a N***er lover he never actually denied it. He actually admitted he was and that he tries to love everyone. A lot of people would have been offended and quickly let it be known they do not like blacks. But no, Atticus never said he didn't like black people and he didnt get offended . The biggest thing is how there wasn't any conversation about her sitting in the car, they never mentioned anything about where she was to sit. Since Atticus’s actions and words show no prejudice and since there was no conversation about Calpurnia sitting in the back seat, then there is no proof or any reason to believe then it was mere coincidence. He stood up against his own family to defend how important and great his African American housekeeper was. He defended an African American in court for free even though he was poor. He defended the same man from a white mob who likely would have harmed the black man. He offered to give Calpurnia a ride home on a cold night, he gave her full control of his kids when he's gone because his trust for her, he admitted to loving black people as much as everyone, he called every white man no matter what he's done trash if he takes advantage of an African American, and lastly Atticus Finch is a mockingbird, something so innocent it would be cruel to harm by tainting his reputation as racist.
