It’s late afternoon, the hot sun of May is beating down, and the screams and shouts of the crowd surrounds you. The ground underfoot is springy and fresh, spikes cutting into it with ease. Your heart races in anticipation for what is to come. All you can see is straight down the lane, right at the finish line. The whistle blows and your heart stops and you think, how did I get here?
It started three years ago. I entered middle school full of excitement and enthusiasm for just this moment. Turning in my first application with gusto. I felt as if I had spent my entire life waiting. Waiting just for this opportunity to run. And as the first season ended, the second had already begun. I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

A major theme in this section is the American struggle with racism. The chapter begins with the historic achievement of Barack Obama and ends with the differing circumstances/perceptions of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his son Congressman Jesse Jackson III. Race is the classification of humans. While science has demonstrated that the concept of "race" is an illusion, it is still a very powerful illusion that shapes the way that humans act and think. "This is our first and most fundamental American Argument: Who, in our constitutional scheme, is a 'person'?"…

Minorities are to blame for everything wrong in the world. That statement is what many satirists are writing about. Satirists are running with the idea of mocking racists ideals. Carlos Hoyt Jr., a social-work teacher, depicts racism as a term originally crafted to “frame a phenomenon that, by the early part of the 20th century (having emerged in the 19th century enterprise of classifying peoples according to a racial hierarchy) was powerful, distinct, and in need of nomenclature” (225). Satirists are addressing police brutality, discrimination, criminal injustice, and overall bias.…

“Don’t worry Erik, we’ll always have each other,” I would tell my brother as we ate lunch by ourselves under the playscape of the elementary school playground. Growing up as the only two Hispanic children in the small town of Arco, Idaho, I found out very quickly that other children could be the cruelest and most judgmental individuals when it came to the subject of race. Comments like “Why are you here?” and “No one here likes you! ” seemed to summarize my entire existence.…

I glanced at the clock and our appointment had started right on time as the doctor walked in at 12 o’clock noon. The country of Australia was built on racism. This land was taken and those who first came here, such as Matthew Flinders and James Cook. They took the land away from the indigenous people of Australia and killed them off with no remorse. They looked at them as if they weren’t even human, as if they weren’t even worth keeping alive, and yet those same very people end up being revolutionary names in Australian History and even having universities named after them. Even after the complete settlement of Australia, we saw immense amounts of racism coming from the government.…

After handling different kinds of work, including being a private nurse assistant and, currently, a human resource coordinator, I have to admit that I have had my share of expressing prejudice and discrimination. At the same time, as a woman and a member of the minority, I had been a victim of discrimination as well at work and social settings. I was born in the Dominican Republic and raised by Catholics, although I am not a practicing Catholic but a believer of a higher being. My culture influenced my identity and experiences. Culture, specifically the sexual division of labor and racist beliefs, have affected my perceptions as an employee and how I was treated in society; moreover, realizing my own biases has me to change myself and challenge…
