Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease transmitted from person to person. Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions. Annual influenza vaccination is the most important to prevent seasonal influenza infection. All healthcare workers who do not receive the vaccination, regardless of reason, must wear a surgical mask within six feet of a patient in patient care areas during the influenza season.
