Pre-Med Reflection

Improved Essays
Freshman year I started volunteering at Suncoast hospice; mainly because of the fact that I needed to build up my pre-med resume with healthcare experience but also because it was the only local health care related volunteer activity and transportation was an issue. Little did I know that taking on a challenge that would have such an impacting effect on my character and how I interpret the world.
Through various activities ranging from baking cookies, making hand sewn comfort bears, to delivering groceries, and folding over 500 “thinking about you cards”; I have come to the realization that the ripple effect does not have any limitations, no matter how big or small one’s actions. Completing over 100 hours with hospice is an accomplishment

As a volunteer I hope to develop skills that will help me become more well rounded, skills such as being humble, charitable, generous, involved, and selfness. In my community we have a lake, where students can volunteer on a monthly basis. I started volunteering at the lake when I was in sixth grade and continue to do so up until this day. I also enjoy volunteering to help the refugees who attend my church. My task is to help them learn how to use computers and write resumes in order to get jobs, but rather than doing it for the ‘recognition’ I use my free time to better the lives of others and that is enough of a reason for me to do it again and…

In my sophomore year of high school, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a program called Dancing Dreams. Dancing Dreams is a ballet dance program for young girls that face special challenges. Being a part of this program had an effect on my outlook on life where I transitioned from a child to an adult mentally. Each of the young girls I had worked with were different in their own way and each had an impact on me.…

Reflective Essay It started off on a wednesday afternoon when my cousin had told me about this club called latinos unidos. It was this club about latinos getting together and helping out communities and just generally the environment. When my cousin told me about this club I generally thought that it would be just a bunch of nonsense work for the greater good. I chose the place I volunteered at because I couldn't find anything else at the moment. This was my first time volunteering…

I demonstrate the use and successfully prioritize health assessments by assessing my resident’s respiratory and cardiac function first due to his current diagnoses. Based off my findings, I decide if I need to report something or not. So far my resident’s vital signs and assessments have been within his normal range. His respirations run high, but I make sure to discuss with the med. nurse when I am uncomfortable with the respiration numbers.…

As I was going to clinicals today, I felt less nervous and felt more calm than usual. I was on Med-surg today and I got to see several different things. I was able to feel and listen to a bruit. The patient was going through dialysis at that moment, so I got to see that as well.…

My most memorable service opportunity was through Tower Guard, where I worked with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) to aid students with disabilities on campus. During my time in Tower Guard, I volunteered in a wide range of activities, including converting textbooks to accessible format, reading exams, and tutoring. Every day I was at the RCPD I interacted with a variety of people and built lifelong friendships. The stories and struggles I heard in discussions with the students and faculty at the RCPD built on my passion for medicine. Regardless of their physical abilities, the people at RCPD were overcoming countless challenges to succeed.…

During week five in my practicum, I volunteered to help out the administrator. I believe it is important to know how every area of the hospice work or at least have an idea. I learned about how organized files of employees, place orders, payroll, etc. I had previews experience in management, but it was in a restaurant, so it was good to see how an office is run. In addition, I practiced to do the social workers' reports and put them into the computer system.…

Over the past semester I have learned a great deal from the clinical experiences I have encountered at East Pavilion and on the Sentara Norfolk General Rehabilitation floor. Through these humbling experiences, I have gained a new appreciation for the ability to perform simple day to day tasks such as bathing, dressing, and even walking on my own. These tasks I often take for granted and forget that what I consider a simple task may be a difficult or painful chore for others. As I reflect on my experiences, I have identified some similarities and differences in the experiences at both facilities.…

This was my first day of clinical and I was pretty scared. However, I'm glad that I got chosen to be in the X-Ray department. Compared to other peers in our class, I would say I got the best experience. I got to shadow a student named Shannon who was also shadowing X-ray Technicians as well. She is now in a 2-year program where she does clinical rotations at Peconic, Brentwood, and Manningville Hospitals from 8-4 through Mon-Fri and all summer.…

I set three specific goals for my first week back in clinical practice. I want to work on a few areas that I found challenging from last semester. My first goal was completing my head to toe assessment in a linear fashion, taking a break in the morning and completing my documentation in a timely manner allowing myself to have more time to learn about my clients’ condition, health history (by going through her chart and care plan), be on time with my charting and arrive on time for our clinical debrief. My client was complex with CHF, hypokalemia, weakness, MRSA and was on contact precautions and had 11 medications to be given by 8am.…

I like to think of leadership as anything you do to influence others. Although I do not often find myself in formal leadership positions, I believe that my willingness to volunteer and serve others has had a positive effect on those around me. The small and simple ways I lead sometimes go unnoticed but that has only made my sacrifice more special to me and, I hope, to those I have served. Selfless service creates a love that I cannot describe. Some of my dearest friends were made when I found myself the giver or receiver of such priceless love.…
