Power In The Tale Of The Shepherd Gyge

Improved Essays
It is in mankind 's very nature to seek power, to seek authority. The concept of a power struggle is what drives many to go above and beyond expectations, sometimes injuring others in the process, all to further one 's own agenda. For one man, a shepherd named Gyges, power unexpectedly presented itself, and Gyges was faced with an internal crisis: succumb to temptation, use the power, and risk corruption, or turn down the amazing power and sink into an unremarkable life of constant struggling. Were I in Gyges ' position, my initial reaction would be to use the power presented, but soon enough I know I would choose the lesser of two evils: a life of constant struggle, working like everyone else to achieve true happiness. It is my belief that …show more content…
This ring allowed Gyges to become invisible, but more than that, the ring made those around Gyge 's forget he was ever in their presence. This power of deception made it possible for Gyge 's to go unseen and do anything he desired, any time and any place. Gyge 's decided to use the power of the ring to achieve his goals and live what to him was believed to be a good life. In his case, this 'good life ' required the seduction of the queen, murder of the king, and seizure of the kingdom. In the case of someone who would choose to use the ring, the next question to be answered is how they would use the ring. Whether someone makes the initial decision to use the ring solely for just and moral purposes depends on their individual morals. Furthermore the justifications in which one uses the ring varies greatly depending on what they define to be moral, good, and unjust. One may use the ring solely to further one 's own agenda, or one may use the power of the ring to do well for the world. Perhaps doing well for the world involves doing well for oneself. Perhaps using the ring for only applications concerning one 's self is just and moral. That which is unjust is anything which injures any individual, physically, mentally or spiritually, and does not possess the ability to defend themselves. In that regard, were I to use the ring, I would aspire to use the ring only for purposes that did not …show more content…
Politics. Business. Media. Celebrities. All suffer the consequences of using power. While we as a society often focus on the physical manifestation of these consequences, that which is most worth noting is the effect to one 's being. In modern society, every day is a power struggle. With an exponentially increasing population, there is only so much power, so much opportunity, to go around. It is for this reason that when someone is presented with any form of power, so often that power is accepted. The same would apply to the ring of Gyges were such a thing to exist. The sad thing about this trend however is that this particular power indefinitely corrupts the individual. One can have the purest of intents, but it is often the lack of power that produces said pure intent in the first place. To have the power of deceit thrust upon oneself would challenge their intentions and as seen in politics and celebrities today, warp an individual to seek more and more power, to give up on justice and seek only physical happiness for themselves. Myself, I am inclined to think I could handle the weight of power the ring would bestow upon me. I feel confident that I could assume such a power and use it for just and moral purposes. Having the power of deception and continuing to seek equality, justice and morality is the true path to knowledge, happiness, and a fulfilling life. While I feel confident I

“Identification because impossible, unless the dead happened to wear some clearly distinctive piece of jewelry or clothing.” That ring was the thing that identified Cora, his wife, after she died and was found in a pile of rubble. He resized and wore it as a reminder of the storm and not only all the loss he had encountered but, all the families that had been torn apart, all the people that died, and all the property that was damaged, to a point where “the world was not in acres, but in cubic yards”. Even after everything was cleaned and damage of the storm could no longer be depicted, the ring served as a reminder of everything that was there and everything that had been lost, not only Cora's…

For it was said, “…One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.” The Ring was a piece of metal that denoted the fall of man; it illustrated how much control a small item can have over an entity. Another object which led to the downfall of men was the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge in the Biblical book of Genesis. Just as the One Ring of Power caused many to die and numerous more to succumb to its power, the fruit from the tree triggered the descent of Adam and Eve into the devil’s will. Both the fruit and Sauron’s Ring are symbols of the corruption of power because those who came in contact with the objects, believed they would be smarter and possess a stronger influence over others.…

With injustice and cruelty running rampant in the world, it is unsurprising that people become determined to make things better for tomorrow. Those aware of the moral greyness of their actions often quote the cliché saying that the ends justify the means. Commendable yet unreasonable, leaders whose sole purpose in life is to fix what they see as “wrong” with the world fall prey to thinking there is only ally or enemy. In the long run, they cause more conflict since they no longer force themselves to hold their principles to same standards as they hold others. This is the downfall of leaders in many works of literature, including Harrison Bergeron and The Lord of the Flies.…

Misusing power creates discontent in society which may cause conflict with the oppressor, as seen in Richard III, or hatred toward oneself, as seen in Brave New World. Another consequence of power abuse is the degradation of moral beliefs and cause conflict with those with higher morality. Abusive power also results in the manipulation of one’s actions, resulting in the conflict between ideologies. Through the examples outlined in both texts, power has the ability to corrupt however, may also be used to benefit society. Thus, power must be entrusted to the correct people in order to protect societal beliefs and…

“Power does not make the possessor evil; it is the possessor who uses it in evil ways” (Wilson). Since the beginning of time, power is a force that has been desired and strived for, yet feared by many. Although it often leads to harm, power itself is not destructive; “Like money, power is indifferent in its usefulness to the person who possesses it” (Wilson). In George Orwell’s, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and William Shakespeare 's, Macbeth, the desire to gain power and the fear of losing it, results in not only corruption but a malicious use of psychological manipulation and the demise of many.…

In William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, Shakespeare demonstrates how the lust for power can make anyone lose their identity in order to achieve power. Because of the desire for power, people will betray anyone in their way, even if they’re close. They disregard their conscience, which leads to immense guilt, thus a part of their humanity is stripped away. In addition, power makes people greedy.…
