Poverty is sweeping through America, causing thousands of Americans to lose their jobs and homes and be on welfare. This major problem is happening throughout America to a large number of people, regardless of race, age, or gender. Poverty is affecting an increasing number of Americans everyday because of low incomes, required costs, and lack of education.
An important issue relating to poverty is required costs such as rent, groceries, bills, and other costs of daily living. In September 2006, Americans were ranked towards the top for being low on extra money. Surveys showed that 22% of respondents stated, after paying their basic living expenses, they had hardly any money left over for spending on themselves. In 2009, there was a large difference in annual income between families headed by an individual who dropped out of highschool, and an individual who received a Bachelor’s degree. Without a college degree, 45% of children in the bottom fifth of income would most likely be in the bottom fifth as adults. With a college degree, children cut their odds of being in the bottom fifth 16% from 45%. About 79% of children with parents who were in the top income were enrolled in college, with about 53% of them earning a four year degree.
