Potassium phosphate is an intravenous injection used to prevent or treat hypophosphatemia, low phosphorus in the blood, through the use of a concentrated solution mixture of monobasic and dibasic potassium.
Phosphorus occurs naturally in every cell in the body and is used for repair and growth of cells and tissues. It is mixed with a liquid before use and should the patient inject themselves at home, they should be instructed by their healthcare professional as to the proper way to mix the solution before injection.
A patient may need several urine or blood tests while taking this medication in order to observe their calcium, potassium and phosphorus levels. If a patient misses a dose, they should take their next dose at the scheduled time and not try to take two doses in order to make up what they have missed.
In the event of an overdose, the infusions should be discontinued as soon as possible and your doctor should restore any elevated calcium or potassium levels with the correct medication.
