Potassium Phosphate Buffer Lab

Procedure: First, we knew which chemical we were preparing Buffer on which was potassium phosphate buffer (KHP04). Then we calculated the mass of the buffer which was 5.44 grams. Then we weighed out exactly 5.44 grams of the buffer and put it into a 600mL beaker. Next, we added 200 mL of water (H20) to the beaker and dissolved the buffer completely. The pH of the solution was taken, and the pH was 3 which meant that the solution was too acidic. To bring the solution to a pH of 7.3, we added 191 mL of NaOH into the beaker. The pH was 10. Then, we added 81 mL of HCL to the beaker, and the pH was 7.37. The buffer in the beaker was then put into a bottle and labeled with our initials, the date, and the name KHP04 buffer pH 7.37. The bottle was

A graduated cylinder was used to measure 200mL of distilled water into an Erlenmeyer flask and then 40mL of 0.6 M NaOH was added to the distilled water in the flask. The flask was then plugged with a rubber stopper and shook in order to mix the solution. A buret was then washed, rinsed with distilled water, and then 5 mL of the NaOH diluted solution. After the cleansing of the buret, it was then filled up with the NaOH diluted solution. The dilution of the solution was calculated to find the molarity of the NaOH.…

Understanding the buffering capacity of a raw water source as it applies to water treatment is the most important factor when starting the coagulation process. Since the coagulation process occurs within a pH range of 5.8-6.3, it is important to know the amount of acid or base that can be added to the source water. Buffering capacity is measured in two different ways in water treatment. The first being alkalinity, which is a capacity of water to buffer or neutralize acids.…

The pH of a buffer is determined by the ratio of unprotonated and protonated species, as described by the Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation: Since buffer in its buffering region contains both unprotonated and protonated species that can accept and donate protons, respectively, it resists sudden change in concentration of protons accompanying with the addition of certain amount of strong acid or base depending on the buffer capacity. Generally, the best buffer region is at pH = pKa ± 1 (BCH370 Lab Manual, 2015 Fall). Above all, the goal of this lab is to understand how pH is changed relative to pKa in real life…

Ashley-Ann Burnett October 4, 2015 Lab #3: Acids, Bases & pH SLS43-14/7-8 Pre-Lab Questions: 1) An isotope is an atom with a different atomic weight due to changes in the number of neutrons in the nucleus. Some examples of isotopes are Protium, Deuterium, and Tritium, which are all Hydrogen atoms. Instead of the zero neutrons Hydrogen has in its Protium form, Deuterium and Tritium have two and three neutrons respectively. This change in neutron number and therefore atomic weight classify these atoms as isotopes of the element Hydrogen.…

The purpose of this lab was to measure the exact mass of a primary standard, to find the precise number of moles of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) included to the reaction, the molarity of NaOH at the equivalence point, the molarity of an aqueous solution containing NaOH, as well as how much volume was needed to get to the equivalence point specified by the end point. The first step in this experiment was to prepare a solution of NaOH with an unknown molar concentration. Then, determine the concentration of the NaOH by titration, using KHP which has a known concentration and is considered a primary standard. during this experiment, Phenolphthalein was found to be the best indicator for the titration of vinegar with NaOH, due to it having…

During this lab, my main goal was to discover exactly how much phosphorus (or phosphate) is in the composition of plant food, or in the case of the Guided Inquiry portion of the lab, in two different brands of plant food. If I put it in the most concise way possible, to do this, I carried out quite a few processes that caused the components of the plant food to separate from each other. Basically, I got the phosphorus, along with some other substances, to form as a precipitate. Next, through a filtering method, I was able to isolate the aqueous solution (the one that the precipitate formed in) from the solid, yet very fine, precipitate. Now, with the two separated from one another, I was then capable of performing a series of calculations to unearth everything that I needed to know, such as the amount of moles of phosphorus that could be found in the plant food, the amount of P2O5 in grams that could be…

The titration was performed so that the solutions could be neutralized. Titration curves can be used to evaluate the pH when a titrant is added. You can calculate the pH from the curve by first determining how much titrant will be added. You can then evaluate the intersection between that volume and the graph. This intersection will tell you the pH at that volume.…

In Part B of this experiment a few mishaps occurred: the pH paper was accidentally placed in the test tube in step ten, and more than the recommended water input was added to the test tube in step eleven. More water was added in step eleven because the solution was too cloudy. The results of Part B were interesting because it was expected that there could only be calcium or barium present in the solution, but both were confirmed present. A precipitate formed in both of the tubes that were needed to be used to confirm the presence of barium and calcium.…
