• Collaboration: Today one of the major highlights of the day, was performing the postpartum and newborn assessments. I was paired up with my partner, Gullevi, as we took turns performing the roles of the postpartum mother. While we technically weren’t able to work together during the actual assessment, we still had collaborated prior to the assessment in practicing performing assessments on one another. We also used those opportunities to critique each other that way we could fix our mistakes and improve our assessments. However, I also liked that we gave one another positive feedback, which was reassuring because although we each had our weaknesses we also had many strengths. Overall, I think each of did a great job in performing our assessments

Although, it seemed really tedious at first I felt that it really helped reinforce my learning. In addition, verbalizing the assessment assisted me in really thinking about what I was actually doing. I feel this is very important that nurses keep conscious of what they are doing while assessing clients because many times after performing assessments for so long, we forget the importance and just see it as routine. When in reality, although assessments are performed at regular intervals, they are still critical and should be performed diligently every time in order to identify abnormalities and intervene appropriately. Also, at the end of our assessments our instructor discussed with us our findings and gave us feedback on ways to improve our assessments. One part that I forgot during my postpartum assessment was to place the patient supine while palpating the uterus, which is the accurate way of examining the fundus. Another part I forgot to do during my assessment was educating the patient in ways of preventing a UTI and comfort measures to implement if feeling pain or soreness in the area in which an episiotomy was performed. However, despite my mistakes I definitely see it as a learning experience and look forward to improving my assessment
