The Effects of Daycare on Children’s Development
Today’s children are tomorrow’s future. Therefore, how a child develops is not only important to the child, but also to our society as a whole. While realizing this factor, we come to the discussion of whether daycare helps a child to develop or is harmful to a child’s development. Despite some evidence that daycare can be harmful to a child’s development, many recent studies show that daycare for babies and young children has positive effects on cognitive abilities, social behavior, and language development. Daycare is a positive option for any parent wishing to prepare their child for school and their future.

With this being said, it is important to remember that language development is also essential to the development of one’s ability to read, write, and communicate. Knowing this, daycare caregivers focus on the ways in which they communicate to the children. “The findings of the present study revealed that, as a group, the caregivers used linguistic structures that have been suggested to facilitate language acquisition, such as declarative sentences, wh- questions, and yes/no questions, albeit with differences in their proportionate use of the structures” (Rhyner, 2007, p. 174). Although each daycare provider has a different way of teaching, the general way in which a daycare provider speaks to and questions the children results in the children’s heightened development of language. “Additional similarities across the caregivers were the relatively high use of compound/complex sentences and the infrequent use of choice questions during book sharing with the children” (Rhyner, 2007, p. 174). The ways in which one speaks to a child does in turn effect the way in which the child develops their language skills.
