Positive Deviance: Paying Compliments My idea for a positive deviant act was giving compliments to my peers. I executed this task at my high school, Milton District, as there are several students and therefore, many opportunities to comment on them positively. I did this on Thursday, November 23rd, 2017 from the morning to early evening. Although I did not compliment every person I saw, I made an effort to flatter my friends, volleyball teammates, and even mere acquaintances. After I completed this activity, not only did I boost the self esteem of my peers, but I also gained trust and felt more accepted. This act is considered deviant because in this time period, people usually throw insults at each other rather than compliments, especially with …show more content…

I observed that peers who I rarely talk to will take compliments acceptingly whereas peers who I am friends with are more likely to question my

While it is particularly important in the preschool years, praise that is given mindfully and sensitively to any child, with the inclusion of reasons why the performance by the child deserves praise, can serve as a positive reinforcement of pro-social behaviors and enable a child to develop new skills with pride in their ability. This excludes the use of praise as a form of manipulation for desired behavior, or praise that is given when it is not deserved. In the article, Does Giving Praise Harm Children?, Alfie Kohn asserts that giving praise reduces achievement, that is to say, he claims that through praise giving, adults unwittingly reduce how well children may perform at a task (2005, p. 112). However, Laura Berk states that young children…

Elements of deviant and abnormal behavior associated with white-collar crime Deviant behavior is defined as any human activity that violates social norms. Social norms are the basic framework that help to keep our society organized and functioning. People that don’t or can’t abide by those norms are present in every aspect of humanity. Normally people will identify these outsiders and keep their distance. Mostly these individuals end up on the fringes of our civilized world, though there are certainly exceptions to this rule.…

On the surface, the concept of positive deviance would be seen as very unusual. However, this abnormality does not equate to a contradiction. Saying that all deviance is negative by definition is conceding that deviance cannot bring about any positive change. Historical cases, such as the Civil Rights Movement, have proven this notion to be false. In these instances, the charge of deviance is shown to be dependent not only on the will of those who rule, but mainly on the receptiveness of general society.…

There are many other deviances that I can think of hearing about, seeing, or being a part of. Howard S. Becker said “it is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant”. This important because just breaking a norm is not the only important factor but how others will react to it too.…
