This reduced cost is achieved by reducing the need for traditional infrastructure to educate people. Schools are able to maximize their spending dollars by “combining live teaching with large amounts of online study” (Clemmitt 1003). This does result in a higher student teacher ratio but allows the teacher more one on one time with the students. This is achieved because a “flipped classroom” is one where video instruction is used to augment class time (Bartos 29). I think this is a good balance because the time in the classroom can now be used to focus on the student. By watching the lesson prior to class, students can be thinking of questions. One notable result is that teachers have more time to spend with “struggling students, who no longer give up on homework, but work through challenging problems in class” (Bartos 30).
Additionally, cost is reduced for the student. Taking classes online has helped me reduce what I am spending on transportation by not traveling to campus on a regular basis. This is not the only savings students may see by taking advantage of online classes. Jamestown Community College (JCC) offers general education courses that students can take instead of the same course elsewhere at a higher cost per credit …show more content…
Government and businesses take advantage of the flexibility that technology has provided in the form of online classes. In the late nineties, I was in the military. They had a need to train and had resources available to take classes online. These classes were available through the Marine Corps Institute. This enabled the Marines to train a large widespread workforce with varied schedules to learn on their own time. No longer did everyone have to be taken to the same classroom with an instructor. Cox Communications, a cable company I worked for in Arizona, had a similar setup. Cox had work from home opportunities for employees of the billing department, and a large number of technicians that worked out of the office. Cox made available online courses through their own online training called Cox University. Here employees were able to take classes related to their department or expand their knowledge to areas in other departments. Here there was no instructor, but coworkers and team leaders were excellent resources when needed. One course that I completed outside my department raised questions that my immediate coworkers did not have the answer to. I was able to ride along with a technician for a day and have those questions answered. It also allowed me to provide feedback that allowed the online course to
