There are three types of position power, reward, coercive, and legitimate power. reward power is the capability to offer some-thing of value as a means of achieving influence. For instance, your manager will say, if you complete this task I will give you a reward. The reward can range from pay raises to compliments. This power position works if the reward is continuous, if not then all power is lost. Coercive power is the capability to punish or withhold positive outcomes as a way of influencing others. This power position implements punishment. For example, my boss tells me if my curriculum is not posted, she will write me up. If you don’t do what I want, I will punish you. The punishment varies reprimands to termination. It works because the employees work so the threat doesn’t exist. Lastly, legitimate power is the capacity to influence through formal authority. When your professor assigns a paper, you do it because it seems reasonable for the requirements of your course. plus, you don’t complete and submit the paper it can cause you to fail the course. This power is you should do what I want because of my knowledge. The amount of information or experience a person has can give them the advantage of getting the task done quicker. Building expertise is challenging, which can discourage someone compared to someone who is highly skilled. Therefore, the newcomers grant veterans respect and follow their lead. Reference is the ability to influence the behavior of others because they admire and want to identify positively with you. In the workplace, people want to be associated with the individual who holds this reference power. They have the power to set the tone for behavior because people want the same power. Reference power have status that translates to influence. it’s just like high school most of the popular kids were followed because most teens wanted to be notice and draw positive attention. Lastly, Relationship power comes from the ability to get things done through connections and social capital, or who you know. This gives an individual power because you know important people to get the task at hand done. The implied message when a manager ask is We know one another and often help each other out.
