Some types of physical punishment are floggings (a short whip made of 9 strands used to whip the subject), the treadmill (the convicts had to walk up revolving steps which turned the mill, grinding grain into flour) and leg irons (shackles are placed around the convicts ankles to cause pain and discomfort). However, these physical punishments didn’t work quite often, causing criminals to harden and have no effect. A new ‘Separate Prison’ was built. Solitary confinement replaced physical punishment. While in isolation from others, the convicts are forced to repent of their crime. The psychological punishment was extremely effective since nobody wanted to be isolated again. You can expect rats, mice, cockroaches and many other vermin in the cells. The vermin could give you fewer, plages etc. If you have committed a crime at Port Arthur, you could be sent to the separate prison, where it’s quiet. You will have to sit in your cell, not socialise and think about what you have done. This was bad since after staying at the separate prison for long, the convict’s mental health would be in a bad state. The convicts mainly had 200 grams of bread and about half a litre of gruel for breakfast and supper. For dinner they had, 200 grams of bread, 400 grams of salt beef or salt pork and half a litre of soup. Some convicts got less food than others, therefore they were far skinnier and less healthy.
