Popul Vuh's Creation Myths

Decent Essays
Many societies have creation myths explaining their origins. The Japanese accounts regarding the creation of earth and the arrival of human society began to be archived in the eight century C.E., the early chroniclers had been exposed to Chinese writings on the subject and were likely influenced by Chinese founding myths. There are significant differences in the Japanese approach, which places more emphasis on the role that nature deities played than on sage-kings. The Japanese account also linked the creation of Japanese islands with appearance of the imperial line. The Japanese believed when Heaven and Earth first parted, there were these "Three Deities" that proceeded to perform the commencement of creation; yin and yang then developed; and the Two Spirits (Izanami and Izanagi) became the ancestors of all things.

The story tells how mankind was first made from mud, but this didn’t work because man could hardly see, hear or walk and were soon washed away. The Mayan gods then made other beings out of wood and these beings were successful for operating but they lacked blood and souls, so they were destroyed. Finally, after much discussion and deliberation, the gods decided to take advantage of the ingredients they had and they added maize to the mixture and made the third generation of humans out of white and yellow ears of maize. The Mayans believed that they descended from this third generation of men and that their wives were created shortly…

The Hindu creation story is more about the Gods creating the universe by sacrificing Purusha an ancient being that holds within him the cosmos, while Hawaiian creation folklore tells more of an event which created the universe, not really a person. These myths are supposed to explain that which is unknown as in the ancient world one did not have much time to think about the creation of the universe when the whole tribe is starving. These myths serve a different purpose as well, as we can see through history the Gods or God are used to justify actions taken by the followers. For example, the infamous Ku Klux Klan or KKK believed that their work was representative of that of God himself. Moreover, groups such as Hamas and the infamous ISIL and ISIS in the middle east justify their atrocities using divine destiny to convince other of their cause.…

Normally, as someone who is highly invested in the idea of science and creation, there is a lack of understanding when it comes to thinking about the different myths of creation. For me, creation all started when a group of molecules happened to join together and eventually evolved into the many organisms that are seen every day. It never occurred to me that there is such a difference between different creation myths. During the first couple of weeks in the semester it became clear that creation is rooted in many cultures in diverse ways.…

Three deities had arisen were the “Spirit Master of the Center of Heaven”, the “August Wondrously Producing Spirit”, and the “Divine Wondrously Producing Ancestor”.
