Pool Pocket Case Study

Pool Pockets
Problem Statement:
A ball is hit off of the bottom left hand corner of a pool table at a 45angle. The pool tables dimensions are all whole numbers and the ball bounces off at a 45 angle, how many rebounds does it take before it goes into one of the 4 corner pockets. Which corner will it land in?
Process:
To start the problem I drew about 20 rectangles to represent the pool table in the problem and recorded the dimensions and rebounds by each rectangle. This took me about 3 days and was a little bit challenging because I wasn’t getting the correct amount of rebounds. I then put the dimensions in order so I could put them on my “Dimensions vs. Rebounds” table easily. Finally, I created the table so I could look for patterns. Most of the steps that I did in the process were with my group like drawing the rectangles and recording the amount of rebounds on the “Dimensions vs. Rebounds” table.
Solution:

The second solution I found says if you have two different dimensions, you can flip them around and they would still have the same amount of rebounds, or X by Y will have the same amount of rebounds as Y by X it’s in pink. The third solution I found says that if you multiply the width by two you would get the length, or Y=X2 it’s green.
Self Assessment:
In this POW I learned about geometry and how to make sense of the algebra in the problem. I learned geometry by using similar figures to find out the formulas and making shapes, and I used algebra by creating formulas with variables. I also learned how to make sense of certain problems like how I found out details like the shape of the pool table is a rectangle, and I need to find out the amount of rebounds in rectangles with different dimensions.

For this week, I was required to read chapter 2 in the "Think Python" textbook. This week's reading was a little more complicated and advanced than the first chapter. This chapter was not about writing phrases, but more about using variables to answer equations, and how to plug them into Python. The Written Assignment that was assigned, was based on what I learned in chapter 2. I was able to use the Pythagorean theorem to answer the question, by declaring the variable of each side, and plugging it in the formula to find the answer.…

The Great Golf Ball Dilemma- Will *All calculations are rounded* This maths investigation explored the best way to package six golf balls and to recommend to the manager of a sports manufacturing company Supreme Sports. The task was to test two designs, a cylindrical box and a rectangular box, under the criteria of wasting minimal space and also the least cost the company. This testing would occur by using the knowledge of surface area and volume using formulas to find out the mathematical answer. The overall most efficient design will be recommended to the manager of the company for production.…

P.O.W 14 Pool Problem Kainoa Harada Problem Statement: The problem in this P.O.W is to find a formula to find how many times a ball would rebound off a table, with varying squares and rectangles to take into equation. Though there can be two separate formulas for each figure. And if you believe, there is a SUPER FORMULA that a group can find once every school year... Process: The process I, and my group, used to solve this problem was simply counting the height and width then drawing the lines the pool ball would travel. Once it hit a whole that would mark the end of the line counting, and however many lines, while using our formula, is the amount of rebounds that figure had. The book backs this up with showing the rebounds of a rectangle,…

Pool Pockets POW For this POW we had to figure out how many rebounds a ball would make on a pool table and which pocket it would land in if the pool table is rectangular and it’s dimensions are whole numbers, the ball always starts at a 45 degree angle in the lower left corner, the ball always rebounds at a 45 degree angle, and the ball keeps going until it hits one of the pockets which are only in the corners. I started out by drawing rectangles on a piece of graph paper to represent the pool tables. Then I drew lines rebounding at 45 degree angles, until the lines hit one of the pockets, to represent the path of the ball. Finally, I counted the number of rebounds the ball made so I could put it with the other data I collected and try…

Problem of the Week Pool Corners Problem Statement: For this problem of the week, we tested out rebounds and corners on a pool table. Our task for this POW, is to figure out where the ball would go if we followed the correct directions. If we hit the ball at a 45 degree angle, starting at the lower corner, and continued to hit the ball until it went into a corner pocket, where would it end up at?…

In 1874, a man named Major Walter Wingfield earned the rights to the game of Tennis, including the rules and all of the equipment that went along with it. As soon as he gained the rights to tennis, the first tennis court was built in the United States, paving the way for tennis to become popular in many other countries including China, Canada and Russia. At this time, and as time passed for quite a few years, the racket did not undergo many changes and it stayed wooden for approximately one hundred years. The wooden rackets made playing tennis very difficult because of the strength needed to hit the ball with such heavy frames. When a company called Wilson realized the inefficiency of these wooden rackets they developed a lighter and more advanced racket, which was made out of thin metal, allowing players to use more power with less effort.…

If a pool made you sick, would you go back in and swim in it over and over? Probably not. However, swimmers who swim for a club or swim for the high school swim team have no other option than to practice in the same pool. This is a problem that is occurring in the Ames Municipal Pool, where I swim for practice each night and on Saturday mornings. Kids are getting bumps from the Ames Municipal pool water all over their arms and legs and bloody noses from the air in the pool area.…

In this episode of Brain Games, I learned of the tricks and illusions your brain will play on you. In Game #1, a basketball is rolling but the shadow of the basketball makes my brain think it is bouncing and jumping up and down. Our brain is trying to rationalize the bouncing and jumping of the ball. Our brains are so used to only one light source that we do not question the perception of shadows. Not only can shadows lie to you, but colors can also lie to you.…
