In the beginning of the novel Ponyboy believes Darry does not love him, although he eventually sees it. On page 42 Ponyboy describes Darry thinking “He's as hard as a rock and about as human. He thinks I'm a pain in the neck.” But in the middle of the story he sees how Darry truly does love him when Darry was clearly worried about Ponyboy at the hospital. Ponyboy thinks to himself “Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something out of me.” Pony did not see how Darry was being overprotective until later in the book. His understanding of his brother proves he is growing up. Towards the end of the book Ponyboy’s perspective changed as well. Ponyboy sees the world as Soc vs grease, but eventually starts to see everyone as just people.On page 118 he thought “Socs were just guys after all.”Ponyboy is constantly being harassed by the Socs and sees them as bullies.
