“Polypharmacy is the use of four or more medications by a patient, generally adults aged over 65 years. Polypharmacy is most common in the elderly, affecting about 40% of older adults living in their homes” (“Polypharmacy”). Polypharmacy causes many problems. Someone could be taking medication for one problem and that medication could lead to another problem within the initial problem, so if that were to happen they would give them more medications. This could go on and on. Side effects are a major thing when it comes to taking too many medications. Side effects become more common when you take multiple medications at the same time and can even be deadly. “Overmedicated seniors have been mistakenly diagnosed with depression, dementia, and even Alzheimer’s disease” (“Over Medication in the Elderly”). Medicine can cause even more problems than there were to start with. Taking too much medication can hurt you and make you sick. The side effects can be major, they can cause many other problems that most people don’t think about. “Stretching is an important part of elderly and seniors flexibility and will help offset the effects of normal decline in the flexibility of your joints, and help you remain active and independent” (Schrift 2015). Stretching would be a good idea for the elderly because it can make a person feel better about themselves. It could help them with being active and independent. Those are two skills that elderly people appreciate as they get older. Most of the time they do not like to rely on other people to help them. If someone could go in to nursing homes, or other elderly homes and offer stretching, it could help a lot of mental health issues. Maybe someone is feeling down and bad about their self, but once they realize they can do the stretches it will make them feel better and they would not have to get medicine for being down and depressed.
