Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Analysis

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine system disorder among women of reproductive age. (Clinic, 2014) Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hyperandrogenic disorder associated with chronic oligo-anovulation and polycystic ovarian morphology. It is often associated with psychological impairments, including depression and other mood disorders and metabolic derangements, chiefly insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia, which is recognized as a major factor responsible for altered androgen production and metabolism. (Publishing, 2011) Between 1 in 10 and 1 in 20 women of childbearing age has PCOS. As many as 5 million women in the United States may be affected. It can occur in girls as young as 11 years old. Women with PCOS are more likely to have a mother or sister with PCOS. A main underlying problem with PCOS is a hormonal imbalance. In women with PCOS, the ovaries make more androgens than normal. Androgens are male hormones that females also make. High levels of these hormones affect the development and release of eggs during ovulation. Researchers also think insulin may be linked to PCOS. Insulin is a hormone that controls the change of sugar, starches, and other food into energy for the body to use or store. Many women with PCOS have too much insulin in their bodies because they have problems using it. (Services, 2014) Women who feel that they have any of the symptoms need to speak with their doctors. Your doctor will ask your medical history; do a physical exam, blood test, pelvic exam, and vaginal ultra sound. If diagnosed with PCOS there could be different treatments for each woman. One treatment that all women should consider is lifestyle changes, mainly by exercising. Medication is also prescribed for some women, such as diabetes and fertility
