Polk during his term as president conquered more land than the United States had ever controlled. he captured Texas, California and Oregon. attempting to get California through peaceful negotiation he sent a man named John Slidell to Mexico offering Mexico $25million dollars for California. this offer was declined by Mexico was taken as insulting. This led him to try corrupt and grimy ways to get Mexico to give him California. Polk went through everything on the treaty trying to find pretext but failed. This showed that Polk was blinded by the greed of the lands that he desired. He did not care how he would get his land or what he would do as long as he got it.
