“I’ve got the conch. Ralph thinks you’re cowards, running away from the boar and the beast. And that’s not that’s not it at all” (126). In this quote, Jack (the evil) is trying to use the boys’ fear and turn them against Ralph (the good) by making them believe that Ralph thinks they’re weak. The fear element is being used by evil to try and bring the boys away from good continuing the ongoing battle between good and evil. Ignorance, lack of knowing, can often lead people to form different ideas about what they think is the right thing to do leading to a division based on morality, or good/evil. Many of the children believe there is a beast hidden somewhere in the mountain and that it can be hunted and killed. Since most of the children who believe there is a beast in the mountain are young, they haven’t grown to learn that there is no such thing as a beast or that something evil can live inside themselves.
