Yes, it should be justified for a cop to fire a gun because they need a way to protect themselves from danger but then again what they consider risk could be regarded as harmless. Police brutality is the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose. Sadly there are many cases where Police officers have used excessive force on someone who wasn't doing anything, for example, Eric Garner, 43-year-old man was put in an illegal chokehold for 15 seconds for allegedly selling cigarettes. Garner repeated “ I can't breathe” 11 times while several police officers held him. Some Police Officers just go off on what they think. Tamir Rice was a 12 year old boy killed by clevelandpolice officer because the police officer mistook his toy fun for a real weapon. The purpose of a gun for a police officer isn’t to kill “In the US, police do not "shoot to kill." The shots are fired at center mass of a person in order to stop the threat. The intent is not specifically to kill the person presenting the threat, but to stop that person." ( Hawk Christopher, Can a police officer shoot to kill). 2 Police Officers exited the cop car and shot a 12 year old boy, Tamir Rice with no warning. Less than 4 seconds later when one of the cops got out the cop Rice was shot. Rice unarmerd and he wasn’t fighting back, But he was still shot. Neither of the Police Officers that shot Tamir Rice were charged of murder of Tamir Rice. A second example of a Police Officer using excessive force because they were suspicious of something is Amadou Diallo who was a black man who was shot at 41 times “The shooting occurred about 12:40 a.m. on Feb. 4, 1999, when the four officers, all in street clothes, approached Mr. Diallo on the stoop of his building and fired 41 shots, striking him 19 times, as he retreated inside. The officers, who are white, said they had thought he had a gun. It turned out to be a wallet.’ ( Fritsch Jane, The Diallo Verdict). Diallo was unarmed and was shot at by 4 white police officers because they thought he look suspicious standing outside the apartment complex that he lived at. A gun isn’t used to kill but Diallo was shot at 41 times. The motive of the 4 Police oficers responsible for Diallo death was obviously to kill and not to threaten Diallo.The trial went on for 4 weeks and the 4 cops were found not
