Poison Oligomycin

Decent Essays
The poison oligomycin is an antibiotic that works a bit differently than the other poisons that interfere with cellular respiration. Instead of the electron transport chain being blocked as with cyanide and DNP, oligomycin blocks the protons in the enzyme during the ATP synthase process. This interferes with the phase 3 of cellular respiration. APT must be made in less efficient methods and more wasteful ways such fermentation. This can create a higher lactate acid build up in the cells which can cause many other problems for a person. Once this occurs, the process is not able to be reversed, so protons cannot cross back over the concentration gradient any longer.

Doxorubicin is an anthracycline antitumor antibiotic effective against a wide range of malignant tumors, although the life threating cardiac toxicity limits its long-term applications. One potential approach to overcome the cardiac toxicity of doxorubicin is to use a glucuronide prodrug (HMR 1826) from which the active drug is released by the action of β-glucuronidase, an enzyme present at high concentration in the necrotic regions of tumor (Bosslet et al., 1998). HMR 1826 has shown to possess 7-fold higher tumor selectivity index and 100 times less cardiotoxicity than doxorubicin (Murdter et al., 1997, Platel et al., 1999). However, low circulation half-life and bioconversion only at the inflammatory cell infiltration sites have restricted…

The doctors operated on soldiers in very unsanitary conditions, used non-sterilized tools, and did not have today’s antibiotics. John Buford was shot, the bullet had penetrated two inches into his left arm, the skin around the wound was peeled back like a banana covered with blood.…
