Poem: Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson
I. Analysis
Line 1 - “down town” means busy or active place where the people work and stay. We can depict that Richard Cory is a busy and hard working man.
Line 2 - by using the pronoun “We”, it implied that the persona of this poem belong to the lower class. The persona is one of those people who lived in sidewalk.
Line 3 to 4 - those two lines described what the persona first impression to this gentleman. Through using the word “gentleman”, it shows that this Richard Cory is part of the higher socio-economic class from his sole or soul to his crown.

Line 7 to 8 - even though Richard tried to be like just a man when he talked to them the people there still uncomfortable whenever he speak to them. And the persona compares Richard to a jewelry that shines and glittered.
Line 9 to 10 - the speaker used a figures of speech which is hyperbole in illustrating how wealthy Richard is. It is said that he is wealthy that a king. And he is an educated man from a first-class school.
Line 11 to 12 - the speaker together with the people there in the down town craving for what Richard had not only his affluent but also his good behavior.
Line 13 - the speaker mentioned that they’re in the lower socio-economic so that they need to work and wait for their own time to shine to have a better life just like what Richard Cory have.

Figure of speech
1. Alliteration: these three lines show the repetition of consonant sound “w” and “p”.

2. Assonance: for line 1 “Whenever Richard Cory went down town” the sound of vowel “ow” repeated within the line.
3. Repetition: line 5 (and he was always quietly arrayed,) together with line 6 (and he was always human when he talked) used the words “and he was always” to give importance to the meaning.
4. Imagery: line 8 (“Good-morning” and he glittered when he walked.), the word glittered creates an image of a jewelry which shines and makes us beams.
