In the Poem Knives by Jane Yolen the idea of love is represented through symbols and each have their own meaning. The first is the idea of a love slipper. It represents the idea of easy love and how love can just fit on anyone or anyone can fit into love, “they thought love was like an old slipper: pull it on and it fits.” it also means comfortable love. Yet a slipper doesn’t last very long it will deteriorate and become wrecked and warped if not cherished. Another symbol from the poem is a shoe. A shoe can be worn for a very long time, when a shoe has a long time of use it has walked many a mile it has stomped it has danced it’s been wet and dirty yet no matter what the matching shoe has always been by it’s side. The last symbol is that of deep meaning and ideas, glass. Glass in loves terms is see through. It allows the other to peer through and see the real person it also allows the person to see themselves in the same light. “What is made of glass reflects the gazer. A queen must be made of glass.” A queen should be able to reflect not only her husband but that of all the kingdom in which she allows them to see herself through the glass but also themselves and how they should be. Glass is very fragile, it can take something so whole and pure and turn it into a weapon, like in love when its broken can be used as means to damage others. These symbols all have a good meaning behind them, they represent the different ideas of love and how they can all be something different to someone else. The idea of a slipper has a truth in it it can be also be delicate but it has less importance than a shoe or glass when a slipper breaks it’s worth it to keep. The shoe is much stronger and can be around for long time, it has the strength to persevere
