Lastly, Pocahontas was made by European culture into someone that the Europeans could look towards to influence others to settle in the New World. Before the story of Pocahontas appeared, all Europeans referred to the Natives as savages who could not be trusted. When this new story of the Native woman who took care of the settlers appeared, Europeans started to imagine the opportunities that the New World could give to them instead of focusing on how to stay clear of the Indians during exploration. Companies, such as the Virginia Company, who were commissioned by the King of England to create settlement in America used their ethnocentric imaginations to make the Natives look inviting, like they were the same as the English. One way they did

Camilla Townsend’s book, “Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma,” describes the detailed story of Pocahontas’s life and how the various Natives lived in sixteenth century Virginia. The Natives lives were ultimately altered when English colonists arrived. The English had specific intentions in mind; colonize the area, become great merchant traders, and convert the Natives to Christianity. The colonists were willing to achieve these even if it meant overwhelming and destroying the Indian culture around them.…

The in-depth book, Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma by Camilla Townsend not only vividly describes the interaction of The English and Natives so well but sets explicitly the stage of what might have occurred during the Seventeenth century. Author Townsend approached this striking era in history with a focus on the chronological life story of Pocahontas. Furthermore, Townsend commenced the shortcomings and advantages that Pocahontas alongside her father Powhatan, and even the English encountered. The English had the desire to acquire land and unfortunately, with that obligation, this significantly impacted the Powhatan Confederacy.…

In this chapter, Richter uses three stories to talk about how the Native Americans dealt with the bringing in of material items, and how they tried to bring Europeans into their world on their terms. The story of “Pocahontas” showed things were different in the aspect that the Native Americans never harmed the Europeans. They captured John Smith and some of his men, but their lives were never in danger. The Native Americans tried to find peace with the Europeans; however, they went and captured Pocahontas. Richter wrote that it might have been possible for the Native Americans to assimilate into European culture, and they might have been able to have the Europeans not tried to force the Native Americans into having the same culture as…

Explain why American Indians were so diverse in 1491. Before 1491, the New World remained untouched and relatively undiscovered by Europeans. Native American tribes had developed unique cultures and customs similarly to how Europe had many different countries. Without horses to make transport easier and with varied climates, the tribes remained more or less separated from one another and therefore developed vastly different ways of life and adaptations to the land. Because tribes outside of a close proximity rarely contacted each other, a myriad of languages developed with little resemblance to one another.…

I have always imagined that there was more to the culture and history of Native Americans than just what I was taught in school; for that reason, In the Hands of the Great Spirit by Jake Page attracted me. Although I realized that a book about the twenty thousand year history of Native Americans would be like reading a textbook, which is not something I do during my free time, I considered the fact that I would actually learn more about a topic that is not “properly” taught in school. One of the biggest topics that I explored in this book was Native American culture; this is an aspect that I had never been taught anywhere else, but that Jake Page really illuminates with myths and pictures placed throughout the book. In addition to that, I…

They turned a relationship with nature into magic, but they also just made the Native Americans look stereotypical. In the film, the song “Savages” is played. If you listen to the song, Disney was absolutely out of their mind when writing it for a kid’s movie not to mention the fact that it makes the Native Americans out to be that bad people (Pocahontas). The song states, “What can you expect from filthy little heathens?…

This way the film was able to portray the Old World much better than how Disney did. An interesting why of displaying the contrast between the Old and New World was how a Powhatan who came with Pocahontas to England was asked “for each Englishman [he] came across, [he is] to place a notch on these sticks.”. It shows the naivety of the Natives, as they believe the English to be like a large tribe not an entire nation. The New World and Disney’s Pocahontas actual show similar variations of the how the New World is viewed. They both show a very natural place, with very spiritual native people.…

They were anxious to expand outward and settle the land of the Indians. They asked for more land so often that “the Indians began to believe that they would soon want all their country, which in the end proved true” (Heckewelder 10). The unfamiliar practices of each culture and the common need for land caused great strife among the Indians and the settlers and only increased the tendency to project ideas on the other party. The Indians soon had the reputation of being cruel, savage people while the settlers were seen as land–hungry conquerors ready to kill the Indians at any moment. The tendency to attempt to categorize other people as something that they are not is developed early on in the infancy of America and continues to be an aspect of society…

Since the beginning of English settlement in North America, there are many documents that make America as it is today. From the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the United States Constitution in 1787, then come the Bill of Rights in 1791. These documents became the “official” documents of the United States. They shaped America to become the nation of freedom with freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and the right to vote. However, what happen to documents that are not official?…
