In the beginning of this book Platt brings up how our churches are making a nice middle class American Jesus. By this he means we made a materialistic Jesus who does not call us to give away anything or expect us. A Jesus who is okay with us being comfortable, balanced, avoiding danger and okay with us doing devotionals on our time, instead of daily time set aside. Americans in our generation do this because we don’t want to be pushed or challenged in our daily lives. As our Society develops and continues to think of Jesus in this way, it brings concerns as Platt expresses on page …show more content…
The main way I see these young adults at chapel here at Johnson, while chapel is going on singing worship songs they will be on their laptops doing homework, reading a book, or playing on their phones. I get it GPA is important and so is school but your Jesus time is important also, just like your friends need friend time well, Jesus needs His time during chapel. That example I gave was an example of people worshiping an American Jesus. One way how I see the American dream affecting Christian lives is how people are working on Sunday, and how coaches are having sports practices on Sundays. At first it was not a big deal but because I thought after church they would go to work or would practice. The challenge is to pick one of the 5 things to do for a whole year and I choose one that will challenge me and push me as a person. I choose to give money to a certain organization for a year and not just $5 or something like that. This will challenge me and I know it will be hard for me as I am a college student living on my own trying to make it on my own and I don’t have money to spare. So, through this challenge it will show me priorities, and what really is important verses what I want. This will stretch my heart, and my mind but I know it will pay off because God sees what I will be doing and eventually reward me for it. Platt says on page 121 “Sacrifice is giving away what it hurts to give, sacrifice is not giving per your ability: its giving beyond your ability.” This quote really spoke to me because many people give the least of what they can give instead of stretching themselves and trusting God. By people doing that I fee is just another example and quote about how the American dream affects Christians.
Before reading this book I never herd of the book, and feared the word radical. But after reading the book I want to share it with everyone because it really changed my life by opening my eye and pushing me to stretch my heart. Platt does a good job of showing us how we can take back our faith from the American dream
