I know this can be a sensitive subject because people have a strong allegiance tied to certain foods because the connection that food has with our emotions and personal experiences. However, please suspend your immediate reactions and defenses, to hear another side that you may not be aware of. Not consuming animal products and having a plant-based diet is beneficial to people’s health and could make a significant impact on the extermination of world hunger, animal cruelty and animal exploitation. Having a plant-based diet will give countless benefits to our health, planet and have been proven to cure illnesses. You can acquire more vitamins and nutrients from vegetables than any animal product and if you eat enough, will feel the same fullness that you felt when eating animal products. The Carbon footprint to grow and produce plant-based ingredients is more than three times less than the Carbon footprint for meat. More food goes into the production of animal products than what is stocked at our markets, this is a large factor of world hunger. By not purchasing animal products or simply cutting down the amount you consume can support the demise of animal cruelty and exploitation. Every person that cuts down or stops consuming animal products can help battle against all these world problems. Your parents might have told you when you were younger that milk will help your bones grow from the calcium it gives, yet vegetables like kale, broccoli and more have either the same amount of calcium or more. (The Physicians Committee) The hormones in the milk that you ingest can mess up the hormones that our bodies produce. (The Vegan Society) The milk that cows produce were made for their babies and by taking the milk from the mothers for our consumption, leaves close to none for the calfs. (101) Well-planned plant-based diets are rich in protein, iron, calcium and other essential vitamins and minerals. “Humans have extremely long intestines; meat takes so long for us to digest that it often purifies in our systems before we can expel the waste, thereby releasing toxins into our bloodstream,” quoted from “Raw Food” by Matthew Kenney and Sarma Melngailis. Furthermore, if your body does not need to spend energy and time to process your hamburger that you just ate, then it can make your immune system faster and give you more energy. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, people that eat a plant-based diet are less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or high blood pressure than meat-eaters are. (The Physicians Committee) Eating a plant-based diet could increase the length and quality of your life, cure sicknesses and support your body to work in its best condition. Not purchasing or consuming animal products is extremely beneficial to the planet as well as the creatures that inhabit it. One pound of beef uses 2,500 and more gallons of water! By not purchasing or consuming animal products you can contribute to aid feeding starving people and ending world hunger. It takes 13 pounds of grain to produce only 1 pound of meat! If those crops were directly fed to the people in need, it would feed more and would not require traveling far because most of the starving countries produce the grain that we feed to the animals. The grain would be used much more efficiently and would cost less. The meat that is produced from the 13 pounds of grains is sold to affluent nations, so if the slaughter houses stop working, all the crops would be distributed to the people that truly need it. “Scientists reached the conclusion that if all food crops were fed directly to humans instead of animals, around 70% more food would be added to the world’s supply, which would be enough to feed 4 billion additional people.” (Gentle World) This surplus would be able to feed over half the humans on earth, including the starving people that are suffering everyday.
