Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications: Hazardous or Helpful? Communication is the key to everything. Every facet of our lives is determinate on communication. No more is that true than in the world of aviation. The complex web of flights over the world dwarfs in comparison to the volume of communication that the aviation field uses. Communication between ground control, airplane to airplane, and maintenance hubs make up this network of information. The information that flows through the air is received and presented to the crews audibly for most forms of communication. Most airliners, more recently, have installed and utilize an alternative form of communication: Data Link Communication. The benefits of using Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) outweigh the concerns and hazards of using it. To determine the viability and weigh the risks of the utilization of CPDLC, one must first know the history, examine the risks and hazards, study the positive effects of CPDLC, and then make an informed decision. The main disadvantage boils down to added distraction, however, the aircraft that utilize this system are often crewed with multiple people who can aid in message determination. The history of why systems such as CPDLC came to be highlights the need for this system despite the risks involved.
