Roly Pollie Party; How Different Types of Music Impact Pill Bugs Behavior

In our experiment, my partner and I came up with the hypothesis that the vibrations of different kinds of music would affect the behavior of pill bugs. Pill bugs, also know as Roly Pollies, are small, black, terrestrial crustaceans, that roll up to protect themselves from predators. Pill bugs can't hear, but they can sense the vibrations from the sounds. This lead my partner and I to see how the vibrations from the sound would impact the behavior of the Roly Pollies. Our experiment required a few steps. The first step was to collect at least three pill bugs outside, which live under leaf litter, and put them into a small, plastic container. When we got inside,we took a two compartment choice chamber and put filter paper on the bottom to see the bugs more clearly. Then, we randomly selected one of the pill bugs and put it to the rightmost of the choice chamber. Then we played either classical or heavy metal music at 14 volume on an iPhone 6 for two minutes. We then repeated the process with our control group, where we had a pill bug with no music for two minutes. We decided to do a second round of the experiment, exactly the same way, with different randomly selected

This is because of the vibrations from the sound, which the bugs think could be predators, so they try to get as far away as possible. The classical music has less vibrations, so the pill bugs don't think it's a predator. If I had to do something different in my experiment I would do a few more trials with some things different. An example of this would be trying different volumes. Where I would go with this would be to see if this experiment would have the same effects on different types of insects. In conclusion, our experiment went very well and we collected enough data to find out what we were hoping to find

The purpose of the lab was to observe the environmental impact on the behavior of pill bugs (Armadillidium vulgare) by using the steps of the scientific method. . We placed two pill bugs in an enclosed space and recorded the amount of time they spent in two categories of living spaces: hard rocks or soft sphagnum moss. Despite predicting that they would have a preference for a softer area, both pill bugs spent more of their time in the rocks than in the moss. This suggests that Armadillidium vulgare has a preference towards environments with hard surfaces over soft ones, possibly due to factors like light or surface area. However, certain experimental errors such as material density and poor handling may have skewed the accuracy of results.…

Bed bugs have similar engorgement characterizes as many other bugs when it comes to the sodium solution concentrations. When offered only water versus when a solution that contained phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), the later was what was found to be the situation where more engorgement occurred. It was expressed that mouthparts that bring about the acceptance of different concentrations of sodium chloride are receptors known as gustatory receptions. In the instances lower sodium was engorged and high sodium was rejected.…

Background: Isopods, or what are often called pill bugs, are crustaceans. Isopods live in damp environments. They can be found under rocks, logs and in soil. In this lab, 10 isopods were given a choice between salt water or regular water chambers to test their preference. The results were recorded every 30 seconds over a period of 10 minutes.…

Conclusion: In conclusion, there is not enough data to prove whether pillbugs prefer to reside in darkness or in lighted areas. The data collected fails to show a clear pattern and expressed an ambivalence towards the environments provided. As mentioned in the analysis, however, if one overlooks the data where the number in light and…

First, in order for this experiment to be conducted, a test chamber was needed to act as the place where the experiment happened. First, the premier action that had to done was to move the pill bugs from their artificial habit to the test chamber by using a stick or a paint brush to carefully move them onto a petri dish, repeated for each of the pill bugs that had been used in the experiment. Then, simultaneously, filter papers were placed on each spot of the two areas, one staying dry and the other absorbing water from pipette, therefore, effectively becoming damp and moist compared to the dry one. Then, spontaneously, the pill bugs were released into the middle area between the two spots, thus, having an equal chance of going either way,…

To gather accurate data place the 28cm x 14.75cm clear, plastic box horizontally on a flat surface and placed the turned off lamp with the 60 watt light bulb 10 cm from right side of the box. Plug in the lamp with the light bulb screwed in, then turn it on and off two times to make sure the lamp worked and to minimize chance of error during the experiment. Then place the graph paper with one centimeter blocks inside the plastic box to be able to see and know exactly how far away the bugs got from the light source. We did this to also minimize the chance of error in the calculation of the distance the sowbugs were from the light source. Make sure to tape the excess parts of the paper to the sides of the box to ensure that the bugs do not crawl under the paper.…

In order to test our null hypothesis, we created an experiment that allowed us to observe the behavior of Acheta domesticus (domestic crickets). For this experiment, we set up a choice chamber that would contain lettuce on one side and banana on the other. The transparent chambers allowed us to observe the crickets without disturbing them and without misplacing them. This type of observation would be considered focal sampling as we were observing the behavior of one cricket at a time for 2 minutes. We conducted a total of ten trials, through which the sex of the cricket(female), the number of crickets (1 at a time), the banana, the lettuce, and wax paper were all kept constant.…

This is because orb-web building spider builds 2D structure of web and cob-web building spider builds 3D structure of web. It is easy for a mud-dauber wasp to hunt orb-web building spider as its web is not so complicated in order to get stuck in it.…

The Experiment aims to analyze the behaviour of the maggots. In this case, behaviour is defined as the way organisms respond to their environment. In the experiment, the orientation of the movement of organisms and gametes in response to external factors of the maggots will be studied using temperature as the external factor. Maggots are organisms that react by instinct and a series of varied reflex reactions are adapted. These inherited actions are very important for maintaining…

It may be ideal under such circumstances to use a housefly larvicide along with Imidacloprid bait for effective control of houseflies. Another limitation the product may exhibit is the delayed efficacy in instances when the density of adult houseflies is very high. The failure in bringing about a reduction in fly density in the Propoxur bait treated areas and the subsequent increase in housefly abundance could be attributed to its failure in attracting flies as well as its lower killing efficacy in comparison to Imidacloprid (as brought out in the study) coupled with the termination of supplementary control measures being carried out in the areas prior to treatment with…

Point 1: (Snowden and Teie pp 133-135) “Music, as we know it, is a human construct made by and for humans based on our species’ developmental experience, vocalizations, perceptions, and cognition, but that music might have had its evolutionary origins in emotional communication in other species.” Music, for the most part, is a man-made concept. The music that humans make are created with humans as the specified audience— Our music only really appeals to other human beings, as it can elicit certain emotions and responses unique to human life. Thus, “[a] major issue of testing animals with music composed for humans is that tempos and pitch ranges of human music may not be relevant for another species. There may also be species typical ways of expressing different emotional states.”…
