In the production of Arcadia, the lighting design people used a spotlight in order to convey that an important plot point or a discovery was introduced/made by one of the characters. Great examples of this are when Hannah and Valentine discover Thomasina’s formula or when Bernard is giving his lecture and makes a statement that is a clue to a plot point. The spotlight shines on them making them the most important character or characters on stage at the moment. Another example of how they use lighting design to tell the story is the use of the lighting color when the mood changes. When someone is angry the lights turn red, and when they are sad the lights are a blueish color.…

Art was not only used as a coping mechanism for those struggling with the brutality of life in the holocaust; for some, it was their only way to escape their own demise. The Belgian artist Fernand Van Horen, known more commonly by his pseudonym Horn, was arrested by the Gestapo on February 24, 1943. After gaining national success for his illustrations featured in the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, Van Horen had joined the Secret Army and joined the fight against Nazi occupation of Belgium. Alone in his cell, awaiting judgement from the Gestapo, he scavenged a few exercise books, a pencil, and a pencil sharpener, and used his “imagination and drawings” to “escape” from his prison. Next, across the street the horizon line creates a shadow, it was created by various light sources extending from inside the diner. Notice, the upper edge of the diner window creates an undoubtedly noticeable shadow down to the lower edge the diners widow in the painting. As the author describes him, he had been a loyal supporter of the French for many years, even having become a member of the French national assembly. However, he began to shift his alliance to the United States after the Ivory Coast gained independence. Muehlenbeck explains the growth of this relationship through the “courting” of Biogny by US President John F. Kennedy.
