Physician Assisted Suicide. For me as a future nurse, it is very important to care for and maintain the health of people. It is my responsibility to do it well, and to protect the highest values that are the life, health, and rights of the people in my care. However, after reading this case study about Miss. S. I realize that it must be really hard for the nurses and the healthcare staff to decide which is the right action to chose, when they face an ethical dilemma, and much more the decision that involve to end someone's life like in this scenario.
Facts
Miss. S. is 79 years old, she leaves alone in a rural area in a glass house suspended between trees and have no leaving immediate family. Patient fell backward and this accident caused her a high cervical fracture, which lead lead her to have a lot of complication in the hospital. She was placed in a halo body jacket and underwent uneventful cervical spine stabilization. She was tranferred to a neurosurgical intensive care and developed partial paralysis of the pharynx and vocal cord. A small bore feeding was placed to Miss. S. to prevent aspiration pneumonia. As the health of Miss. S. was so complicated and she needed a good care the neurosurgeon and the social worker began to talk to her about the discharge planning.
