The day is warm, above the seventies as we enter the month of April. The hospital is quiet, its white walls giving off a calm feeling. My eyes closed, I breathe in and out, thankful for the position I find myself in: happiness. Happiness for being someone I always wanted to be: a physician assistant. I hope to one day find myself in that exact positon one day in the near future, fulfilling not only my dreams but also my mother’s dreams of me becoming a physician assistant. A physician assistant is a certified medical provider who can take the medical history of a patient, assist in surgery, write prescriptions, as well more depending on the location, specialty, and experience of the physician assistant. As a physician assistant, one’s daily activities include reviewing patient’s medical histories, conducting physical exams to check patients’ health, order and interpret diagnostic tests such as x rays and blood tests, and making diagnoses concerning a patient’s injury/ illness. Work schedules differ as they vary according to the setting but usually physician assistants who work in a clinic work a 40-hour week. A physician assistant’s workweek may include weekends, nights, early morning hospital rounds to visit patients or being on call for emergencies. In order to do this job, one must possess the knowledge and skill to practice in a variety of clinical situations as well as successfully complete the PA clinical training program. A physician assistant must have abilities and skills of five varieties including observation, communication, motor, conceptual, integrative and quantitative, and behavioral and social. They must also be able to work well independently. A very important skill to know is of computers and electronics. You must have knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. Important skills to have include critical thinking, speaking, active listening, reading comprehension, and social
