Physical changes happen from the time a person is born. Every day our bodies age just a little bit more and understanding these changes and why they happen will help know what to expect as a person ages. There are ways to slow down the aging process by taking better care of our bodies. I asked older individuals questions about their skin, bones and muscles, and sense of smell and taste. Thinning skin is troublesome to many. It is the first line of defense for infection and protects individuals from disease. With age, skin becomes less elastic and more wrinkled. Oil glands slow down, and skin becomes drier. How a person's skin ages depend on their lifestyle, heredity and personal habits can age skin faster than normal. Signs of aging can be thinning skin, rougher skin, and become easily bruised. There are also changes that happen below the skin such as fat loss in the face, cartilage loss, and bone loss. The number of nerve endings in the skin decreases which causes people to become less sensitive to pain, temperature, and pressure. Due to this injury, may be more likely. The taste buds on the tongue have decreased sensitivity because of this change foods that used to taste good may taste different as into salty, bitter, or sweet. The sense of smell also helps distinguish food taste. The sense of smell diminishes due to the lining of the nose thinning, and the nerve endings in the nose start to deteriorate. Dry mouth is also a condition that affects many older adults this happens because less saliva is produced. Besides the internal changes that occur with the mouth and nose that effect taste, there are some visual changes that happen as well. As individuals age, the nose grows wider and longer, and the tip tends to drop. The gums in the mouth start to recede, because of the receding gums more food particles can become trapped and cause decay and cavities. The most frustrated response I received from talking with older adults had to do with how things taste to them now. Some of their favorite recipes no longer taste like they used to. A couple of the older adults I talked to had a diminished sense of smell but didn't know that they did. There were times I would ask if they could smell a particular smell that was nearby but they did not smell it.
