Physical Properties Of Water Essay

Water exists in all three physical states only on planet earth, the only planet where life exists in the whole of universe. Water supports life on earth due its unique physical properties such as density, temperature variation, reflectivity, surface tension, specific heat, boiling and freezing points, as well as its chemical properties including its polar nature, dissolving ability and capacity to act both as an acid or base. The exceptional physical properties are all attributed to water’s specific chemical structure and bonding. Ice is less dense compared to liquid water and hence floats on top oceans, protecting aquatic life. Water temperature affects dissolved gases concentration, rate of photosynthesis and other metabolic activities, conductivity, …show more content…
Water in earth is found in liquid form in various water bodies, solid ice form in the Polar Regions, as well as vapor form in the atmosphere. While density of solidified form of any compound is more than its liquid state, density of water is maximum i.e. 1.0kg/m3 at 4°C, and it is less than 1 for ice at 0°C. During phase change from liquid to solid water molecules arrange themselves in an orderly fashion that increases volume and decreases density (Pidwerny, 2014). This peculiar property enables ice to float on water. Density of water at different temperatures is listed in table …show more content…
two hydrogen atoms bonded to a single oxygen atom. Oxygen atom can accept two electrons to attain stable octet shell configuration, and the two hydrogen atoms with 1 electron each can share them with the electron deficient oxygen atom through O-H bonds. Greater affinity of oxygen for electrons makes it partially negatively charged, and the hydrogen atoms attain a partial positive charge i.e. water molecule is polar (Shakashiri, 2011). Concentration of electrons on oxygen bend the O-H bonds, and H2O molecule remains stable attaining a bent V-shape, with the H-O-H bond angle being 104.5° (Shakashiri, 2011). This unique molecular shape and polar nature, depicted in Fig 1.enables water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with very high associated

Terms that will be discussed in this paper will include freezing point, Phrases of matter, freezing point depression, and solution. Freezing point is the point when water turns into ice (What Makes Ice Melt Fastest). If you have ever lived in a cold climate, you have most likely have seen trucks that put salt and sand on the streets after a snowfall to prevent ice from building up on the roads. Salt acts to the lower the freezing point of water, and changing the phrase of matter.…

    1. DNA Structure and Function DNA is the type of organic compound that stores the genetic information in a living organism. DNA is made up of two strands of nucleotides, which include a phosphate group, five carbon sugar, and a nitrogenous base. Each individual strand in held together by strong covalent bonds (a bond formed as a result of the distribution of electrons between atoms). The two strands are then joined to each other by hydrogen bonds between complementary bases.…

Pure water boils at 212˚ Fahrenheit (100˚ Celsius) at sea level, but water can also boil at temperatures as low as -90˚ Fahrenheit (theoretically). The reason for this phenomenon is pressure. “There is a direct correlation between pressure and temperature when it is dealing with the boiling point of water,” says Jacob Young, a mechanical designer at Blauch Brothers, Inc (Young, J.C. 2017). The pressure on Earth at sea level is 14.696 PSIA (Pounds per Square Inch Absolute).…

Water is possibly one of the most ordinary yet powerful substances on the planet. It plays a role in the birth of stars and planets and is a necessary component of sustaining life. Because water is such a common element, it is often overlooked when featured in stories or novels. Water can symbolize several characteristics, add depth to a tale, and can say a lot about characters without saying anything at all. Water is crucial for life and is often used symbolically to represent life.…

A hydrogen bond is the electromagnetic attraction exerted between polar molecules where hydrogen is bound to a larger atom. An example of this would be a hydrogen atom bonding to an oxygen or nitrogen atom. A water molecule is formed by 2 negatively charged hydrogen atoms attaching to a positively charged oxygen atom. This is why hydrogen bonding is such an important concept in The Martian.…

Water is colorless, odorless, and some might even say tasteless, but we would not even exist without it. Water is a transparent liquid and covers more than 71 percent of Earth’s surface. Water has been used and recycled throughout the course of history. Water has many properties and we rely on it for our survival. Since water is one of the basic needs of life, you would be surprised how much controversy comes with it.…

The earth is considered a cool body and the the reason that the temperature isn 't freezing cold is because it absorbs heat such as through greenhouse gassesa that conatin co2 whic are released by plants and also pollution( that is also why we have very severe storms because of the insanely high levels of co2 emissions from factories and cars). The earth 's water also absorbs radiation and becomes a reservoir transferring heat equally among its body of water and stabilizing the hot radiating temperatures and cooling them…

Discussion The aim of this experimental report was to analyse and examine several water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, water temperature and turbidity, in order to determine the overall state of health within Freshwater creek. Once the results from each parameter were collected, from both locations, it was that found they each had multiple interrelationships between each other as well as several anomalies which could have potentially skewed the final results. It was initially decided at the beginning of the dissolved oxygen experimentation that a reading would be collected from two locations with different features, in order to present a representation of the specific amounts of dissolved oxygen in different areas. It was evident…
