Reading acquisition is the learning or developing of reading skills and occurs in a stage-like progression (Chall, 1983), e.g. Piaget’s stages of cognitive development. Reading is oral language in a visual format. Three key emergent literary skills that predict acquisition of reading skills are:
1. Phonological awareness.
2. Print recognition- matching symbols to sound.
3. Oral language – to listen and learn the language.
