1.1 LEVELS OF PREVENTION IN PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING
This concept was taken from module 1”introduction to public Health Nursing”, sub-topic 3” philosophy, principles and concepts of public health nursing”. Public Health is defined as the science and art of preventing diseases, prolong life, promoting health and efficiencies through organized community effort. Public Health is not just concerned about the health of an individual but it involves caring for the health of an entire population which focuses on prevention of diseases thereby protecting the population promoting their health and restoring them back to optimal health to improve healthy community. In this case the individual is affected with the disease but the public health nurse works towards reducing the effect of the disease on the individual and preventing further complications. In order to stop the progress of the disease and its complication, the nurse must ensure early detection of disease and ensure that it is adequately treated. Regular screenings and laboratory test could be done to detect illnesses and begin early treatment. Example mammograms are carried out to detect breast cancer and if breast cancer are detected early treatments like chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy can be commenced early to save the individuals life. Also HIV test are done early, the patient can be placed on anti-retroviral drugs based on the CD4 count to help increase the CD4 level and prevent complications. Also if diabetes and hypertension are detected early, treatment can be commenced and it will help to prevent complications like retinopathy, stroke, …show more content…
The community should be involved at all level of prevention to ensure proper cooperation. The Community needs to know what every level of prevention entail so that they will fully participate in ensuring that they work towards promoting good health.
1.4 APPLICATION TO CURRENT JOB
Level of prevention in public health nursing is a concept that is not applicable to my current job. The idea about public health nursing is taking health care to the community and hence does not apply to my current job.
Though in my current job we should try to apply the concept of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for the good of the patient to ensure optimum health.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE TO THE NURSING PROFESSION
This concept is vital to the nursing profession as it helps us know how to prevent diseases and disability at all level. It also helps us ensure optimum health for our clients.
