As an aspiring clinical mental health counselor, I have already begun forming basic beliefs, concepts, ideas and attitudes toward my own personal philosophy of the counseling profession. Professionalism is individualized or personalized; a counselor controls their own identity as a professional. (VanZandt, 243) Possessing self-awareness is a useful skill to be able to recognize how your own attitude, values and feelings can affect you as a counselor. With self-awareness it is important for a professional to be mindful of their own vulnerabilities, tension level to provide ones self-care.
