John Wheatley purchased young Phillis to be a servant for his wife, Susanna
Susanna did not train her to be a servant, instead she received an education in theology, English, Latin, and Greek.
Wheatley wrote her first published poem at age 12
Wheatley became the first African American and first U.S. slave to publish a book of poems
Phillis died in Boston, Massachusetts on December 5, 1784
Phillis Wheatley’s purpose for writing poems was to show people that women can write poems.
An even bigger purpose for her was to show that African Americans can be more than slaves, they can also be educated
Wheatley’s motivation was to prove people that women
