It has been mentioned that at the age of two is when prosocial behaviors come into display and a child is forming a conscious. In Philippe Rochats research on self-awareness, he uses five levels to explain the order of occurrence in which it is displayed from the time of birth until the age of 4 or 5 (Rochat 2013). Some of the very most important stages in mental and emotional states of a child include the first steps, the formation of words, or even smiling at a person. I’ve learned that it’s better to suppress your weaknesses and to display strength. I know now that it’s okay to be different, awesome to be bilingual, and useful to be self-aware. It’s enough for me to understand this concept and act upon it, but others are not as fortunate. I see many whom levels of self-consciousness must be of a concern. They focus so much on they way others perceive them causing them to lessen their chances towards self-actualization. I, personally, am at a disadvantage when I over analyze all situations because I am just increasing my levels of stress and not achieving any goals. I have yet to avoid over thinking because it has become almost like a habit. When I try to go with the flow or think simply, I tend to regret my decisions and end up stressing even more about all the what ifs. This is why I think self-consciousness can be both a negative or positive trait. It also depends on the personality of a person and how their level of self-consciousness. For example, self-consciousness among someone who is an introvert and has been feeling depressed will lead to a negative affect. An example of self-consciousness as a positive trait could be of an individual who is planning to rape a girl but ends up realizing that their thoughts are outrageous and that they should be seeking help.
