Phase 2 Surgical Therapy Case Study

Improved Essays
Phase II – Surgical To correct the periodontal defects occurring in this client I would suggest a particular therapy called Phase II Surgical Therapy. I would suggest two possible surgical therapies to the client. Firstly, I would recommend that the client should have an extraction of certain teeth (particularly the 37) since mastication, at this point of the progression of the periodontal disease, is reduced. Before these teeth are removed, it is important to advise the client that partial dentures would be required. Since exotoses were discovered in the client’s assessments “their surgical removal (before prosthesis construction) prevents the possibility of irritation of overlying oral mucosa by the tori” (Darby and Walsh, 2010). Therefore because the exotoses were noted in the client’s assessments it is important that they are surgically removed before the prosthesis is manufactured. An alternative procedure to improve the health of the client’s oral condition would be Regenerative surgery. Since the goal of periodontal therapy is to establish a healthy periodontium, restore lost form and function it is important to at least consider regenerative therapy (Gehrig and Willmann, 2008). …show more content…
By completing supportive therapy every three months the operator will be able to examine the client’s overall and oral health, oral hygiene status, probing depths, bleeding upon probing, attachment levels, and so much more. As an operator, we will be able to determine if the interventions had improved by the next appointment or next supportive therapy appointment. These assessments are used as a baseline in the event we need to determine if the disease has stabilized or progressed. Finally, this client’s supportive therapy that includes debridement, fluoride treatment, and oral self-care indices and evaluation, will assist my client in maintaining a stable

To identify what local doctors think about treatment planning, I conducted a small survey to ask questions and get their ideas on the topic. There are many different ideas about what a treatment plan entails, and who is responsible for writing and presenting a treatment plan to the patient in the office. It is necessary to gain all of the knowledge possible about the subject of treatment planning so that we are prepared when go out into practices for what is to come. This survey was to help identify what different dentists feel that the dental hygienist is responsible for. Treatment planning seems to be a subjective idea rather than an objective idea because a treatment plan is mainly a diagnostic and problem-solving skill.…

Patients diagnosed with periodontal disease have increased probing depths, bone loss, and even tooth mobility. Monitoring their condition helps cease the progression of bone loss and gingival recession, and periodically removing calculus decreases microorganisms and irritability of the tissues along with attempting regeneration of the periodontal attachment. Most inmates are behind bars for several years or even life. Based on sufficient standards of care, I believe they should be offered dental care.…

Studies have highlighted that poor state of oral health in hospitalised patients is due to low priority given to oral care provision, poor knowledge of oral procedures by healthcare professional, lack of protocols assessment tool, lack of implementation of oral care regimes and lack of staff training. There are guidelines for the provision of high quality care for oral hygiene in hospital settings, but as the research points out, there is inadequate details for family carers. The help of carer’s and family during patient hospitalisation can make a great difference to this aspect of their care and well-being and more should be done to encourage their involvement (British Dental Foundation, 2014). The aim of this innovation is to; raise awareness for the need for effective oral health promotion, plan for change to make sure oral health promotion is provided, education and training is provided and assessment tools are provided; implement/execute the plan then evaluate the plan and ensure that the change becomes permanent. The use of methamphetamines or meth is a wide spread epidemic across the world, but in the United States the use of meth is on the rise and fast. A major reason why meth is being used by so many addicts is because it is cheap, easy to make, and the high can last for up to 12 hours. Not only can the use of meth cause permanent damage to your brain, it can also cause unrepairable and severe oral health effects. “There are currently about 1.7 million abusers and in 2008, 13 million people over the age of 12 admitted to trying meth, and around 529,000 of those people were regular users. A majority of addicts using methamphetamines are males 19-40 years.”…
