For fashion purposes, the animal rights organization PETA ___ that about 50 million animals are killed each year for fur alone. (_) For centuries, the fur of animals has been used by humans. In earlier times, fur was used to protect their bodies from cold weather. Wearing it also represented a sign of higher class and luxury. Today, fur is used mainly for fashion purposes. Despite the rise of ethical issues concerning the use animals for fur, many well known high fashion designers have and continue to exploit animals for their fur. “The largest fur importer and fur product exporter, over the last few decades, is China.” (“Rules on wearing fur?”, 2006) They also supply the United States with more than half of the fur used in the retail industry.
