Persuasive Essay: Should Teachers Be Paid?

Superior Essays
Teachers all across America are becoming dissatisfied and disapprove their salaries. Since teachers are not making as much as they should be, the outcome could be very disappointing and fatal to some schools. This idea that teachers are not making enough as they should be started in the 1800’s. During this time period, kids in America had low test scores and most of the blame was put toward teachers. Of course these kids test scores only got worse, and teachers salaries decreased as the fault was put on the teachers. I came up with the idea to do my persuasive essay on this topic because my step-mom is a teacher, and she doesn't make close to the amount of income as she should be. As one of the top teachers in her school district, she …show more content…
“I don't know about all teachers, but my teachers do not seem to care. They never get work graded on time, and they never really teach anything. They just tell us to go and read the dang book and that we should learn from that. They don't stay after school to help, they want to go home. I do too, but at least I am willing to stay... My teachers don't work for their money and do not deserve a raise” (Debate.org). Although teachers can get a little bit off track and ‘lazy’ sometimes, teachers still work very hard to educate students and organize 100 students grades. We need to give teachers the benefit of the doubt in this case. “Teachers responded to our study by citing the long hours they work. But unlike studies that rely on teachers' shorter "contract hours," we used teachers' self-reported work hours - if they said they worked 60 hours, we assumed they did. But it's important to note that, based on these self-reported data as well as a detailed Bureau of Labor Statistics Study, average public school teachers don't work unusually long hours - about 44 hours per week, the same as other college graduates” (Biggs, Andrew, RealClearMarkets). Although some teachers could slack and teach only for the money if their income is raised, a large majority of teachers still teach for the love of it and not slack if income is raised. I am also a student and been around many …show more content…
This topic is important because teaching is one of the most important and meaningful jobs in the United States. Teachers create students into mature adults, and they need to be paid more for their huge contribution on students lives. People should take this topic seriously because people should think about the financial troubles on teachers. People need to remember how hard teachers work while earning such a small pay. I think that people could contribute and help teachers earn more money by, persuading the government to raise teachers pay. We could also start programs and events that would raise money for schools, so teachers could get more of the tax money. Parents could also bring in more school supplies and classroom materials, so teachers don’t have to spend their money on these items. Teachers are the people who change lives and make you who you are today, we must give them

Public Education across the United States has been under attack for several years. Parents want school districts, administrators and teachers to be accountable for their children’s education; however, they do not want to finance their schools. School districts are forced to work with the income they have. This income varies from district to district and state to state. Affluent districts across the United States have larger budgets than poor districts causing great inequalities in students’ education.…

In the news article, New York’s Bad Teachers, Back on the Job, Marc Sternberg authenticates his credibility by making reasonable claims and backing them up. Sternberg claims “Forcing hundreds of these [unmotivated] teachers upon schools this fall... will weaken school accountability, damage staff morale... and undermine the educational gains students have been making...” This assertion is supported by personal experience and statistics gathered during his time as the founding principal of Bronx Lab School. Sternberg recalled that “by 2008, 86 percent of Bronx Lab students graduated with more than 350 college acceptances and $2.5 million in financial aid in hand” thanks to the dedicated teachers he hired. Not only does this convinces the reader…

Teacher education started off as mastering a trade through the medieval guild system through apprenticeships. Over time, more formal teacher training efforts were put into place in Europe in the 1400’s and in the United States in the early 1800’s. By the time 1900 rolled around, more people required college-level educations in order to meet societal needs. Hence state teachers’ colleges developed in the mid-1920’s (also around the time when women were given the right to vote in the United States), which developed into state colleges in the 1950’s and then state universities in the 1960’s. Since colleges have evolved greatly, the amount of training needed to become a teacher has become more involved and requires a longer period of time to…

More one-on-one meetings with students, individualized lessons, and different teaching methods could all be promoted by a budget increase. The key, though, is to use the money wisely. Education, as it is now, and as it may become, ideally promotes general welfare by equipping people with the tools they need to survive. It also promotes liberty by putting them in positions to do what they want with their lives. Either Transportation (2.7%/$103 billion – Document D) or Homeland Security (1.5%/$60 billion – Document D) could be shaved to buff Education, the reasoning being that we already have working transportation, and that certain parts of…

But how? The U.S should reform its system of determining teachers salaries, thereby attracting more outstanding individuals to the profession and in return increasing the quality of education. It is important to recognize that most teachers are fairly compensated for their work, but we also acknowledge that many of the teachers who outperform their peers are not rewarded. By reforming the teacher pay system to reward high -performing teachers would improve the education system…

It is seen that many lower-funded schools pay teachers less, while higher-funded schools pay teachers more. This is another important aspect for me to take into consideration as a future educator. Although these observations are not always true, I feel that it is important for me to work in a district that one advocates for their students and two pays their teachers for what they expect out of them. Whether that be in an inner-city school…

Public school funding has been an ongoing issue for years. No matter how wealthy the district is, there can be an issue for all when the funds are not distributed fairly. Without enough funds from the government, schools cannot provide adequate supplies for the classroom, cannot provide sufficient transportation cost and cannot pay salaries to those involved in the school district such as teachers and administration. Public school funding also helps provide reduced and free meals to students who qualify. What a lot of people don’t know is where all of this money is coming from and who is paying for it.…

fails to pass a standardized test or regents exam. Further, it is not fair, for teachers to be criticized based on how well their students perform in their state exams. In addition, it is also not fair for principals to use test scores to judge teachers how effective and ineffective they are? Ever since, the nation has industrialized, we have forgotten how strenuous teaching is and often times, they are not always observed fairly and their accomplishments are also not always acknowledged. Teacher’s role often changes from teaching to counseling, because some students are in the poverty borderline, according to a Washington D.C post, by Lyndsey Layton.…
