Many American families believe that SeaWorld is the best family vacation spot with its many parks all over the country. A typical visit to SeaWorld includes petting dolphins, visiting the aquarium, and being splashed by a majestic Orca. While SeaWorld may seem family-friendly, it definitely is not animal friendly. The tourist attraction, also known as SeaWorld, tortures its animals by ripping them from their homes and families, placing them in pools that might as well be bathtubs. Although families enjoy taking a trip to SeaWorld, they would feel a lot differently if they knew about the constant pain and torture inflicted on SeaWorld’s animals.…
“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness” - John Muir. For a young Chris McCandless who was unsure of his identity and struggling with family issues, it makes sense that he turned to the outdoors in an effort to find clarity and purpose. Chris grew up in a fairly wealthy home, with a seemingly ideal life. His parents gave him everything he ever wanted and more monetarily, however there was always a disconnect between them. After his father’s affair, Chris seemed to view all of their gifts as bribery, and as a result, rejected them.…
At least 161 orcas have died in captivity at Seaworld due to the small enclosures and dangerous training. Seaworld is a marine resort that captives water related animals such as orcas, dolphins, and flamingos. They train the animals to put on shows and do tricks that they would never naturally do. Tilikum, a 22 foot, 12,500 pound orca, was captured in November of 1983 when he was just a calf. Trainer Keltie Byrne was pulled to the bottom of a tank by Tilikum and drowned.…
In 2013 the documentary “Blackfish” premiered at the Sundance festival, but was later spread to a larger community with the help of CNN. The film “Blackfish” questions the treatment and imprisonment of Orca Whales and proposes the idea that being held in small enclosures is detrimental to the health of these intelligent beings. After the documentary aired, “Seaworld’s profits dropped 84%” (Rhodan), but there are some visitors who still choose to attend the amusement park. What is the amoral history behind Seaworld? Are Seaworld visitors an accomplice to the abuse of Orca Whales?…
What would you say if someone of high power called for a culling on sharks? Would you be for? Or against this action? From my perspective, a culling would do nothing but lower the numbers of sharks, but not the numbers of attacks.…
It's time to put the bay back in Bayview! With the rapid decline of many of indigenous animals in our small town the economy and environment are getting increasingly worse. You may ask, “What should we do to fix this serious predicament?” and you wouldn't believe how simple the solution is! The simple and most easy way to fix it is to just let all the animals thrive and not fish!…
Salton Sea is the largest inland body of water in California, measuring at 35 miles long and 15 miles across. Its salt level is fifty percent saltier than the ocean itself. The Salton Sea is beneficial to more than four hundred and twenty different species of birds. The species range from “white and brown pelicans to eared grebes, curlews, ibis, avocets and snowy plovers. It also supports millions of fish and a host of invertebrates, important food sources for the birds.”…
Sharks are the definition of evil in a vast amount of a human's eyes. Because most do not know the facts, most will not face their fears. People with a serious fear of sharks have what is called galeophobia(Surfer Today) ,which makes one who easily builds up with anxiety terrified, such as glancing at a writing form like this.(Penberthy). Humanity has ruined everyone's perspective on sharks by hiding the truth so they will think badly of them because what sharks have done in the past. Humans have killed more sharks than sharks have killed humans, and they tend to have no problem with approaching sharks in a slaughtering way.…
Jerry Li Mrs. Kimpton English IV, Period 5/6 27 October 2015 Drop the Harpoon and Save the World When talking about whaling in the ocean, people generally attribute it to adventurous, or even heroic, images of brave sailors chasing those gigantic marine creatures in the stormy seas with harpoons in their hands. Whaling plays an important role in the long history of human beings. It persists until today in many cultures as a tradition. However, years of hunting have pushed the whales on the edge of extinction. Strict protection legislations are desperately needed to save this species.…
Saving the wales would be the next big advancer that Greenpeace would go on and it would be one of the longest things that they were ever all dedicated too and this was long before Greenpeace became the way they are today. This would start out with having the us and Canada ban whaling which was not hard to do after proving the facts about how over hunted these animal are. Whale are one of the only animals with bigger brains then humans along with dolphins. And according to Dr. Moore this means there is no humane way to kill one of the largest animals ever to live on our beautiful planet. The two country’s that continued to whale the longest was the USSR and Japan and since in the 80’s with the cold war in full swing a peace group didn’t want to show favoritism they had to go after both equally this was hard when they were trying to find these ships in the middle of the world’s largest ocean…
They are round black dolphins that are so small that they can fit into a bathtub. Maui’s dolphin, a subspecies of Hector’s dolphin, also known as Popoto, is the rarest marine species known in existence and one of the smallest known dolphins. There are less than 50 Maui’s dolphins in the world today, and this number is still dropping, they are almost extinct. Humans are the biotic factor of the decrease in their population.…
Veterinary care, a constant supply of food, and stimulating toys and games to keep animals healthy and happy, allowing many of SeaWorld’s whales to “continue to define the average life span of killer whales in the wild” and is also why “ five of [SeaWorld’s] animals are older than 30, and one of [SeaWorld’s] whales is close to 50.” (Source B). While some animal parks do neglect their animals, most animal parks try to protect animals from extinction and other…
When a whaler is brought to tears from separating an Orca from its mother, it is clear the act is unjust and amoral. John Crowe one of the whalers that day, recalls the event in an interview comparing the experience to “kidnapping a little kid in front of his mother’s eyes.” He, like many others, learned through this tragedy that Orca whales deserve to remain with their families in the wild. Within a company that makes billions each year, its top salesperson is enslaved into a tiny glass bowl. After the release of the movie Blackfish in 2012, it revealed the abhorrent business behind the treatment and captivity of Orca whales in Seaworld.…
SAVE THE SEA TURTLES Nearly all species of marine turtles are endangered and the ones not endangered are considered threatened, according to WWF®. All sea turtles found in U.S. waters are federally listed as endangered or threatened. Today, thousands of young turtles hatch and begin their journey from the southeast, United States’ coast to the Atlantic Ocean. Today, only one-thousand in every ten-thousand sea turtles survive into adulthood.…
Animals are as important as people. They’re loving, caring, and nurturing just like us. They deserve better than what we give them. Every year millions of sea mammals get injured or stuck in debri fishermen leave behind. Caught in fishing line, stuck in a net, and wrapped in ropes these creatures are helpless.…
