“Beyond Petroleum” was once the slogan of the big oil giant BP, before the company decided to pull the plug on its decades of R&D work on alternative energy. The organization had promised to spend a major portion of its investments on its energy efficiency and renewable energy research programs, but later, the company defaulted much of its capital on various ways to extract fossil fuels. When big oil companies like BP, Exxon Mobil and Chevron put their financial interests ahead of their responsibility towards the environment, our planet is endangered. Global warming, one of the major concerns for the world leaders today is a direct result of our dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels. As such, there is an immediate urgency for all the countries in the world to make commitment to cut down on greenhouse gas emission; and for the rest of us to start reducing our carbon footprints.

In fact, our world can barely handle a 2 degree Celsius increase in global temperature before we see devastating consequences. Many countries are already in danger of disappearing or facing other tragic events. Similarly, many wild animals are also endangered due to the climate changes. These concerns are all heightened due to the human activity and we need to act in order to sustain our planet for us as well as for the future generations. The world needs to come as one and work hand in hand to solve the greenhouse gas emission issue. The world needs to shift paradigm from fossil fuels to sustainable renewable energy. All countries need to be attentive and responsible as Denmark and Sweden. Moreover, all individuals need to improve the habits when it comes to reducing carbon footprint. This is not going to happen overnight, however, all the counties and their citizens need to be committed in fighting against global warming so that the Maldives still stay in the world
