There are over 78,000 children in Canada’s welfare system, with over 30,000 looking for a loving home. Same sex couples in Canada are able to adopt and provide children homes, so why is it still a controversial topic? In Canada, anyone of any race, religion or sexual orientation is allowed to adopt as long as they have a loving safe home for the child, but in other countries such as Russia, they have strict laws against gay couples adopting. Is it because it is better for a child to have no parents or two fathers? Or is it a cultural or religious thing? Whatever the reason, there are couples who would do anything to have a child yet they are restricted because of their sexual orientation.

It is extremely important because these children also deserve loving parents. A report by Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute found that, of gay and lesbian adoptions at more than 300 agencies, 10 percent of the kids that were adopted were over 6 years old, which isn’t usually an age group people want to adopt. He also found that gay couples adopted children of colour which is also a group of children who aren’t usually adopted. The family may be discriminated while they are there which can damage the child 's self esteem. If they were to move to a country where it is not legal they may not be able to both be the legal parents of the child. This will cause confusion to a child when their parents have to separate. Allowing same sex adoption opens many more opportunities for children to be adopted in Canada. There is controversy in Canada and the rest of the world about same sex marriage because of all the different viewpoints of everyone. Even though couples in Canada can adopt without mentioning their sexual orientation, it is not like that everywhere. Same sex adoption has its benefits but it also has its negative side. Same sex adoption can cause confusion or loss of opportunities and can affect religion and culture. Overall, same sex adoption will always be relevant positively and negatively. Resources:
