Americans receive less than 1% of their daily needs from vegetables consumed. Processed foods have become more popular in this century than any other and are causing major health alarms throughout the nation. The problem with processed foods is that they deprive people of essential, daily, nutrients. Even though this is a developing problem in society today, there are easy and simple fixes to help solve the issue of foods being processed. There are a lot of different opinions as to what is considered processed, but many opinions state that canned, frozen, and refrigerated are all food items that are processed. This becomes a realization to the human population that what they are eating is not whole, nutritious, or beneficial. Foods that are processed have become a staple for most American families. There are many problems arising with this lifestyle though. Problems such as cancer, obesity, and heart disease are not uncommon to be found in people consuming an excess amount of processed foods. …show more content…
School lunches are often made from boxed, canned, and frozen food items, which are all considered to be processed. The New York Times says that The Agricultural Department pays for the fresh foods such as apples, potatoes and more, but the school then pays processing companies to turn these into menacing food items for children. (Komisar “How the Food Industry Eats Your Kid’s Lunch”). First, for our community, we need to get in contact with the school staff members such as our principle, support staff, and lunch staff. The idea is to go back to the way food used to be cooked. The school cafeterias would buy and receive wholesome ingredients to create meals from scratch to serve to students. This is the first step in the process of reducing the consumption of processed foods. If our school accepts the idea, then the plan would be to further expand the process into the district and
