The world dictionary describes the word hobby as "An activity done regularly in one 's leisure time for pleasure." To some a hobby might be creating a masterpiece out of puzzle pieces, to others it could be building model cars, and to some their hobby could consist of smoking the devil 's lettuce. What sets these hobbies apart? The first two can be done freely and in the open, but the last one has to be done exclusively in a secluded area because it is often frowned upon by society. The reason why it is an undesirable hobby is because it is currently illegal across the US with the exception of a few states. To humans, pot is just another way to escape reality and enter their own carefree world. Weed does to stoners what beer and liquor have been doing to Americans for centuries. But better yet, weed comes with all the positive vibes and none of the negative effects of alcohol or other drugs! According to an article by the name of Alcohol Poisoning Deaths, "There are more than 2,200 alcohol poisoning deaths in the U.S. each year – an average of 6 alcohol poisoning deaths every day." While another article on Time Magazine mentions, "In 2012 alone, there were 41,502 drug overdose deaths, of which 16,007 involved opioid analgesics and 5,925 involved heroin.." These numbers are quite astonishing. Now let 's look into the what the databases have recorded for marijuana overdose deaths. According to an article on the Huffington Post, "In the long history of humanity 's marijuana use, not a single person has ever died from a weed overdose." Yes, you read that right, there is none recorded to date. Congressmen Earl Blumenauer states, "The first time it happens, it 'll be news and people will know." Marijuana is more of a mellow drug compared to the effects of cocaine or heroin so it comes to no surprise that this drug does not make the newspaper headlines too often nowadays. On Top of not massacring our race, legalizing pot could bring in millions of dollars by applying taxes to the sales of marijuana. Stores would pop up everywhere and be regulated by the federal government. The consumers won 't have to be in harm 's way in order to obtain their product all while Uncle Sam is collecting taxes, seems like a win-win. Once the American consumer has easier and more affordable access to weed the US could be one step closer to crippling gangs across the U.S, not only that but they could put an end to marijuana being smuggled into the US.
